NYT: Thanksgiving 2021 May ‘Be the Most Expensive Meal in the History of the Holiday’

Thanksgiving of 2021 may “be the most expensive meal in the history of the holiday,” the New York Times wrote Monday about inflationary prices American families will absorb to celebrate the holiday first commemorated by the Pilgrims in 1621.

“I can buy that this will be the most expensive Thanksgiving ever, but there’s an income-inequality story here that matters a lot,” agricultural economist at Michigan State University Trey Malone told the Times. “The rich are going to be spending more on Thanksgiving than they have ever spent before, but not everyone is going to be able to do that.”

Indeed, Calvin Moore, the Congressional Leadership Fund communications director, a super PAC with close connections to the House Republican leadership, told Breitbart News that Biden’s policies have created a situation in which “working families can’t even afford to celebrate the holidays this year.”

“Family budgets are being pushed to the brink, and voters will quit House Democrats cold turkey because of it,” Moore said.

The Times noted many grocery items have increased in cost since Donald Trump held the Oval Office. American worker Caroline Hoffman said vanilla extract is nearly $2 more than last year. “I dread buying vanilla,” she said.

I don't doubt it and yes the price of pure vanilla extract is even more ridiculous than before.

I haven't seen any turkeys in the supermarket freezers -- none.  I asked the store manager when they should be getting them in -- she really didn't know, but hopefully by the beginning of November and that there would likely be a shortage of smaller sized turkeys.

The local little Italian market is taking orders for Amish turkeys.  I'm thinking of calling and seeing how much they are and placing my order.  Something tells me that there's going to be a turkey shortage.  I went into the grocery store tonight and I couldn't believe the bare shelves -- you'd think that there was a hurricane coming. 

Yes, we have a huge storm coming!

Our Wal mart put the Turkeys out today.  Frozen no name brand were priced at $1.49 lb.

  For us, it's just the Durkees onions, cranberries, and maybe spices and mushroom soup and such... The rest is grown right here, and is just about the same cost as always. Even though the garden died in the heat and smoke this summer. The pantry is a couple years deep anyway.

I am going to start buying baking ingredients next week for Christmas cookies etc..I am not making a ton of those either. I normally do at least 12 dif types plus candies....cutting way back this year.

Good idea on buying baking ingredients, nuts too  -- also I'm going to pick up stuffing mix, sausage, whole cranberries, etc., ... provided that they are available.

Who would have thought we'd be seeing bare shelves in the U.S.A.?  It sickens me and saddens me.

I just bought 3 ducks for Christmas.  Just me and two kids hopefully, if not, just 2 ducks for me and my son.  He loves crisp Duck. my red cabbage, butternut squash, potatoes, and brussels sprouts.  Then, he wants to 'diet'..lol. So, just making my Red velvet cake from scratch and authentic frosting. His favorite.  Maybe butter cookies with hot chocolate.  Depends on my energy. Last year with one duck, there were no leftovers, so I took care of it.  He is a big boy.  All the cookies I made, were given to my neighbors and pkg. sent home with son.

I will be alone this Thanksgiving, but have half a turkey in freezer.  I plan to make that.  Some fixings.

It's already started.  We've already been told to lower our expectations.

Looks like I won't be cooking TG dinner this year, just making some sides to take to my sister's house. But yesterday, when I saw Butterballs at Walmart for .87 per pound, I bought one. Usually, Kroger puts turkeys on sale the week or two before TG for .48 per pound, but I didn't want to take the chance they won't do it this year.

Our local Ralphs/Kroger had Butterball brand for $1.59 lb., I think there may have been a purchase requirement to get the price or have their  store card.
