Brian Krebs tweeted:

Confirmed: The DNS records that tell systems how to find Facebook.com or Instagram.com got withdrawn this morning from the global routing tables. Can you imagine working at FB right now, when your email no longer works & all your internal FB-based tools fail?

To be more precise (and Geek Factor 5) the BGP routes serving Facebook's authoritative DNS were withdrawn, rendering all Facebook domains inaccessible. That's per @DougMadory , who knows a few things about BGP/DNS.

No, someone had to have had inside access to pull this off.  Even company ID badges stopped working.  People couldn't get in the building.

May have been a detected intrusion which was not able to be blocked so the system made itself invisible to prevent real damage..  Pretty smart if that is what happened.....

As I understand it DNS and IP records are critical infrastructure, internet backbone stuff. Info that is safeguarded and requires high level access.

If those can be taken down that easily by any competent hacker, then the internet is in big trouble.

Or, we got trojan horse activists with backbone access who have no problem shutting down anyone who doesn't fall in line.

Last option is a govt.

I suppose that's possible, but it's still poor design if they didn't segment the whole thing so that the entire thing would not be taken down by one intrusion.

Yep. Didn't make sense with the information that user data was compromised and being sold on a hacker site... Either they hit the DNS servers or they hit Faceboot... Unlikely they would do both.

So... Servers down makes more sense with the user leak.

Facebook's Chief Technology Officer offered his 'sincere apologies' on Monday afternoon as a global outage of the website along with Instagram and WhatsApp stretched into its fifth hour, costing the company $50billion and CEO Mark Zuckerberg $7billion and counting.

The cause of the outage is believed to have been changes made to Facebook's systems at 11.50am EST.

It is believed they were caused in error and were not a cyber attack, but Facebook is yet to confirm the cause of the outage.

Apparently, it's taking so long to get it all back up and running because (a) they ran their door access protocols on the same networks, so that's all shut down and they can't get physical access to the servers without a struggle, (b) the Border Gateway routers were all managed remotely - which means you need to either have static IP addresses to the peers, or you need a DNS system, and since they didn't use static IPs, the people who manage the peers - the people who know what needs to be fixed - can't access the physical machines and are going to have to travel to where the machines are physically located.

I back up all my pics onto a thumb drive and I also print them out.  I learned the hard way long ago, I had all my pics backed up onto my computer and my computer crashed -- lots and lots of pics lost.

Printing out pics or putting them on a thumb drive may be old fashioned, but at least I have them.

Just a note. Unpowered USB thumb drives (FLASH memory) can degrade over a couple of years to the point of loosing your data. It greatly depends on how many write cycles it has gone through and the FLASH technology being used. Spinning disk USB drives tend to last a lot longer unpowered.
