Jobless Claims Plummet To 310,000 As Workers Brush Off Delta Concerns

The number of Americans filing new unemployment claims decreased to 310,000 last week as the economy continues to slowly recover from the coronavirus pandemic.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics figure released Thursday represents a substantial decrease in the number of new jobless claims compared to the week ending Aug. 28, when 345,000 new jobless claims were reported. That figure was revised up from the 340,000 jobless claims initially reported last week.

Economists predicted this week’s figure to come in at 335,000, The Wall Street Journal reported.

“We are not seeing regular initial claims spike, so that would imply that the delta variant isn’t causing massive layoffs like we saw at the beginning of COVID,” Indeed economist AnnElizabeth Konkel told the WSJ.

New coronavirus cases surged over the last few months, but have appeared to peak, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The spike was caused by the more contagious delta variant of COVID-19, which some have blamed for the slowing economic recovery.
