Sigh ... Prop 47, which I voted against, raised the threshold for a theft to be a felony to $950. A shoplifter stealing a $2.98 bottle of ibuprofen can still be arrested, can still be prosecuted, and can still be found guilty and sentenced for a misdemeanor. Unfortunately, there are at least a couple of major counties whose DA will not prosecute shoplifting, and cities whose police consequently do put effort into capturing and detaining shoplifters.
As stupid as Prop 47 was, California did not legalize theft. At all. And as much as I'd like to see Prop 47 effectively repealed, that would do nothing for the problem of prosecutors who will not enforce laws.
