The escalation in gang violence threatens to complicate — and be aggravated by — political efforts to recover from last week’s brazen slaying of President Jovenel Moïse. Haiti’s government is in disarray; no parliament, no president, a dispute over who is prime minister, a weak police force. But the gangs seem more organized and powerful than ever.

While the violence has been centered in the capital of Port-au-Prince, it has affected life across Haiti, paralyzing the fragile economy, shuttering schools, overwhelming police and disrupting efforts to fight the covid-19 pandemic.  ...

South Florida Man Held as 'Central' Suspect in Haiti Assassination

A Haiti-born man based in South Florida has been detained as a "central" suspect detained in the assassination of the island nation's president, Jovenel Moïse, and may have been plotting to take over as president. according to Haitian national police chief Léon Charles.

Charles accused Christian Emmanuel Sanon, 63, of working with those who plotted and participated in Moïse’s killing, which stunned the nation of more than 11 million people.

Charles said Sanon was in contact with a firm that provides security for politicians and recruited the suspects in the killing.

"He arrived by private plane in June with political objectives and contacted a private security firm to recruit the people who committed this act, Charles said at a news conference Sunday. The firm, he said, was a Venezuelan security company based in the United States called CTU.

A Haitian doctor who has been a fixture in Florida for more than two decades has been arrested in Haiti under suspicion that he was one of the leaders behind the middle-of-the-night assassination of President Jovenel Moïse last week, Haiti’s police chief said Sunday.

Christian Emmanuel Sanon’s name was mentioned by several of the people who are in custody in the case, Haiti National Police Chief Léon Charles said. Sanon was the first person one of the suspects called after being captured. The Haiti National Police arrested him as part of their ongoing investigation into the leadership of the group of 26 Colombians and two Haitian Americans suspected of carrying out the assassination.

Sanon “made contact with two other people who are implicated, they know who they are, and are recognized as intellectual authors of the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse’,” Charles said.

Now the Colombians have been killed or captured in the aftermath of the July 7 assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse, and Intriago's business faces questions about its role in the killing.

Colombian Mercenaries Suspected in Haiti Assassination Have US Military Ties

During a Thursday press conference, President Joe Biden said that he will send Marines to reinforce the US Embassy in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. However, there are no plans “at this moment” to send additional US military personnel to the Caribbean island nation, despite a request from Haiti’s government for a US troop deployment following the assassination of President Jovenel Moise earlier this month.

Biden’s remarks come as the Department of Defense announced that some of the members of the Colombian hit squad implicated in the assassination of Moise had US military training.

“A review of our training databases indicates that a small number of the Colombian individuals detained as part of this investigation had participated in past U.S. military training and education programs, while serving as active members of the Colombian Military Forces,” Lt. Col. Ken Hoffman, a Pentagon spokesman, told The Washington Post. Hoffman declined to elaborate on a specific number and added that the Pentagon’s review was ongoing.

Martine Moïse was seen wearing an arm sling and a bulletproof vest after arriving by plane at Port-au-Prince airport on Saturday. ...

Martine Moïse, the wounded widow of Haiti’s assassinated president, attended a memorial for her late husband on Wednesday – still wearing a splint and accompanied by her three children.

The former first lady, who returned to the Caribbean nation Saturday after undergoing treatment at a Miami hotel, appeared before her fellow citizens at the Museum of the Haitian National Pantheon.

Dressed in black and wearing pearls, Moïse received condolences from newly installed Prime Minister Ariel Henry, former President Michel Martelly and Helen La Lime, the UN’s top official in the country, the New York Times reported.

(The GrayZone) A South Florida businessman accused of funding the plot to assassinate former Haitian President Jovenel Moise received legal advice endorsing a mission to capture the head of state from a confidential informant of a US intelligence agency, court documents unveiled in July 2024 allege. According to the accused’s legal team, “the discovery received from The Government redacts the U.S. intelligence agency with which [the informant] is affiliated,” but “it is clear that he is a [confidential informant] for a U.S. Intelligence Agency.”

The businessman, Walter Veintemilla, and his company, Worldwide Capital Lending Group, stand accused of providing a $175,000 line of credit to Florida defense contractor CTU Security LLC, which reportedly carried out the assassination.

On July 1, Veintemilla’s attorneys filed a pretrial motion to depose the alleged intelligence informant, “J.C.,” who is described as an Ecuadorian lawyer living in Bolivia. Veintemilla’s defense argues that testimony from “J.C.” would support their contention “that several investigative and administrative agencies of the United States Government were aware of the actions and intentions of his alleged co-conspirators in Haiti and supported those actions.” ...

Our church supports a school down there, and we've heard many stories over the past year from the pastors who run it about how difficult it's been to get food for the children, and of all the other unrest and turmoil.

My wife and I recently decided to stop donating to our Haiti group. I had designed a water desalination still for them to use to get fresh water, and was told that it would require to much effort to pour the salt water into the still and empty the fresh water twice a day. we then offered to purchase several milk goats that they could use to produce milk and later provide meat. again we were told that it was to difficult to milk the goats. I found out they literally have various groups lined up to just hand them things and make no effort for themselves.

Jokes aside, the DEA and FBI are not US intelligence agencies. Further, "informants" simply means local thugs who turned in other local thugs. They didn't inhabit DEA or FBI cubicle farms, whether in Port-au-Prince or WashDC.

It's fairly obvious that Haitians are incapable of governing themselves. For the good of the people of Haiti the U.N. should be running the country.
That doesn't mean that things will be hunky-dory in Haiti. Just that we won't be hearing about starvation, assassinations, and Haitian immigrants. Accept that Haiti will always be a welfare state.
It's time that sane people gave up on the idea that Haiti can be a regular self-governed country.
