No designated survivor for Biden’s first joint address to Congress

There won’t be a designated survivor for President Joe Biden’s first joint address to Congress Wednesday night, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Tuesday.

Typically, presidents designate a top official to camp out in a secure location in the case of a disaster that kills the president and cabinet officials. But this time, amid the coronavirus pandemic, things are different, with attendance for Biden’s speech limited to 200 lawmakers, Biden administration officials and staff

“There does not need to be a designated survivor because the Cabinet will be watching from their offices or home, but they will not be joining him for the speech,” Psaki said.

With Vice President Kamala Harris, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate President Pro Tempore Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) and Secretary of State Antony Blinken all expected to attend the speech, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen would be the de facto designated survivor as the next in line of succession, assuming Yellen does not attend.

Republicans Blast Pelosi, Say They Will Skip Biden’s First Address to Congress

Numerous Republicans will not show up for Biden’s first address to Congress on Wednesday night. In a letter to Speaker Pelosi, Republicans explained why several GOP members are unable or unwilling to attend.

“You recently invited President Joseph R. Biden to deliver a Joint Address to Congress on the evening of April 28, 2021,” the letter states. “As you know, this day falls during a week when only the Senate is in session and during which the House stands in recess for committee work. Additionally, it has recently been reported that only a small number of Members of Congress will be invited to attend this session, which would be unprecedented. We request that you reschedule this event for a day during which the House is in session and extend invitations to all Members of Congress.”

The letter continues to state the reasons the Republicans oppose the address being held on the date Speaker Pelosi scheduled it.

Biden meets with TV anchors ahead of joint address

President Biden met with a select group of television anchors Wednesday, prior to his first speech before a joint session of Congress.

“As is tradition before a meeting to a Joint Session of Congress, the president today held an off the record briefing with some TV anchors,” tweeted Jake Tapper, a CNN host and the network’s chief Washington correspondent.

The GOP needs to decide what to call this administration/political party. "Far left" is meaningless, "radical" is in the eyes of the beholder.

Hint: One sentence from POTUS45's last SOTU address got the attention of the whole world: "The United States will never be a Socialist nation", including legal immigrants from Cuba, Central America and Eastern Europe.

Call the democrats what they are and slip in a few examples where it has not worked.

Biden will address a joint session of Congress starting at 9 p.m. ET.

Who will be attending?
The joint session will be designated a National Special Security Event and there will be a limit on the number of lawmakers in the chamber due to Covid-19 protocols, a Capitol official involved in planning told CNN. Lawmakers will be seated in the upstairs gallery in addition to the House floor and guests will not be permitted. A total of about 200 people are expected to be allowed in the House chamber.
Chief Justice John Roberts will attend on behalf of the Supreme Court, a court spokesperson told CNN.
First lady Jill Biden will attend the address to Congress but because of coronavirus safety protocols she will not be bringing guests to sit with her, Jill Biden's press secretary Michael LaRosa told CNN.
