Sen. Ted Cruz flew to Cancun, Mexico, with his family this week as Texas dealt with a winter storm that as of Thursday still has left 500,000 without power, Fox News has confirmed.

Photographs of Cruz, R-Texas, at an airport began circulating on social media late Wednesday, with people alleging that the senator had left the state for Cancun amid a major crisis. A Republican source told Fox News that the allegations Cruz was traveling to the Mexican city are true.

"The photos speak for themselves," the source said.

Cruz said in a statement shared with The Hill that he accompanied his daughters on a flight to Mexico since they had the week off with school canceled.

“Wanting to be a good dad,” Cruz said, he decided to fly “with them last night and am flying back this afternoon.”

Cruz has  a "people" problem --- whether deserved or not.  This is very bad optics and another self-inflicted wound.

Being irrelevant to the solution is really not much of a defense for this self-inflicted wound. 

Cruz had a perfect opportunity to show he cared about the people of Texas.  He could have at least met with the Governor for an update and avenues for fixing this problem going forward.  It would have been a much better photo op.

Are you this concerned with what the other members of the Texas delegation to DC is doing right now? Where's Cornyn? What is the representative from your Congressional District doing during the storm that has the state locked down? Are you down at your Reps local office demanding he do something about a state issue?

And it if was a scheduled vacation (I don't know one way or the other), I would certainly go anyway, to be near my fam, even if it got turned into a working vacation. The downside to that is he'd use either the course at Andrews AFB or at Ft. Belvoir...which means that soldiers who were looking forward to playing a round or two after a hard week at work had their reserved tee times cancelled without warning.
