GOP senators criticize Trump legal defense as 'unfocused' and 'weaker'

A number of Republican senators criticized Trump’s legal team Tuesday for lacking focus and making “weaker” arguments than the House impeachment managers on the first day of former President Trump’s impeachment trial.

“Anyone who listened to those arguments would recognize that the House managers were focused, relied upon and trusted upon the opinion of legal scholars,” said Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) after joining with five other Republican senators in voting that the trial was constitutional and should proceed.

“Anyone who listened to President Trump’s legal team saw they were unfocused, they attempted to avoid the issue. And they talked about everything but the issue at hand,” he added.

Cassidy’s vote on Tuesday was a surprise after he voted last month in favor of a motion by Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) declaring the trial unconstitutional.

This is from ONE jackass Senator.  And what kind of moron is he?  He votes to give the Senate powers it doesn't have because an attorney shuffled papers?

We have got to bury the GOP, even it means burning down the village to save it.

Me either. That second guy shifting and swaying back and forth was making me sea sick. I hope Trump has more than this in his arsenal.

Trump's team did a helluva good job defending the Constitution ... and proving this trial was not constitutional ... which was the purpose of today's opening session @mystery-ak

If this $#it is allowed, any civilian (conservative, flag waving, constitution loving Republican) running for congress will be scrutinized, "investigated" and impeached for whatever the communist/democrat party deems "a constitutional violation!"

Hard to imagine a more perfect presentation.

The only thing missing from it was any evidence that President Trump incited violence, which I would think would be crucial in any trial where the defendant is being prosecuted for inciting violence.

Six GOP traitors who don't give a damn about the rule of law :

Sens. Susan Collins of Maine, Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Mitt Romney of Utah, Ben Sasse of Nebraska, and Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania – sided with Democrats in calling for the trial to proceed.

Meanwhile ... Roberts remains absolutely silent!

Trump unhappy with his impeachment trial defense after day one: reports
By Sarah Polus - 02/09/21 07:38 PM EST

Former President Trump is reportedly displeased with his legal representation, just one day into his impeachment trial.

Trump expressed frustration with his defense's strategy right out of the gate Tuesday, according to a report in Politico.

"President Trump was not happy with the performance of his legal team in action," a person familiar with Trump's evaluation of the day told the outlet.

CNN reported that Trump and his team were confused by his team's last-minute change in speaking order, and that the former president was "borderline screaming" as attorney Bruce Castor delivered his opening argument, which was criticized by people on both sides of the aisle as rambling.

Castor also said during his comments that he was impressed with what the Democratic representation had presented, a remark unlikely to make the former president happy.

Dershowitz has commented, but what about the whole proceeding being unconstitutional??

.....Harvard Law professor Alan Dershowitz, who defended Trump at his first impeachment trial but is not on the team this time, said Castor’s meandering speech “wasn’t even an argument, it was just some musing.”

.....Dershowitz said the remarks that followed from Trump attorney David Schoen were “excellent.”

Schoen blasted the proceedings as the “political weaponization of the impeachment process” and slammed the trial as “a chance by a group of partisan politicians seeking to eliminate Donald Trump from the American political scene.”

Dershowitz called on Trump’s team to “focus on the First Amendment” going forward, saying, “That’s the argument I would be making if I was there.”

Now I know I was right..Laura saying the first attorney was terrible and Hannity burying his face in his hand.

Hannity even asked Schoen if they will be on top of it the next few days.

Laura wondering why Castor spent so much time on praising the Senate and House managers...I asked the same questions..

Trump impeachment lawyer Bruce Castor shrugs off criticism
by Haley Victory Smith, Breaking News Reporter |
 | February 09, 2021 11:02 PM

An impeachment defense lawyer for former President Donald Trump is defending himself against criticism that his speech to the Senate was not particularly effective.

Bruce Castor, who delivered the defense's opening argument on Tuesday, expressed that he's not putting much stock in those critiques.

"You put 100 people in the same room, you’re going to get 100 different opinions," he told the Wall Street Journal.

Trump was impeached by the House on an article of incitement of insurrection in connection to the Jan. 6 Capitol siege. His legal team argues that his speech is protected by the First Amendment and that a former president cannot be subject to the impeachment process under the Constitution.
