Bipartisan push to strip the names of Confederate leaders from Army bases imperils critical defense policy bill

TRUMP’S VETO THREAT LOOMS LARGE: It was a scene that was all mask-covered smiles and bonhomie at yesterday’s traditional “pass the gavel” ceremony on Capitol Hill, as the bipartisan leadership of the Senate and House Armed Services committees met with conferees who will iron out differences in the two versions National Defense Authorization Act for the current fiscal year.

Each year the gavel is rotated between the House and Senate, with this year Democratic Rep. Adam Smith, chairman of the HASC, handing over the gavel to Republican Sen. Jim Inhofe, chairman of the SASC.

“The ‘pass the gavel’ meeting continues the bipartisan, bicameral spirit that has long been a trademark of the NDAA,” said Inhofe, predicting the defense policy bill will pass for the 60th year in a row.

“The Armed Services Committees represent one of the last true bastions of bipartisanship, and our ability to produce legislation each and every year is proof that the legislative process still works,” said Smith.
