A Centers for Disease Control report released in September shows that masks and face coverings are not effective in preventing the spread of COVID-19, even for those people who consistently wear them.

A study conducted in the United States in July found that when they compared 154 “case-patients,” who tested positive for COVID-19, to a control group of 160 participants from the same health care facility who were symptomatic but tested negative, over 70 percent of the case-patients were contaminated with the virus and fell ill despite “always” wearing a mask.

“In the 14 days before illness onset, 71% of case-patients and 74% of control participants reported always using cloth face coverings or other mask types when in public,” the report stated.

I am not surprised.

(1) Mask give some a false sense of security.

(2) The people wearing mask were out and about more often, in places where there were larger groups of people, being more likely to get infected.
A farmer in the middle of nowhere has no need to wear a mask, but someone going up an elevator to a 20th floor office may.

I believe people heard "wear a mask", and they took that for meaning they were safe, so they put on a mask, continued their life,touching, being close to people, not washing hands, thinking their mask which they touched many times while wearing it, protected them so why do anything else?

I wore one 8 hours/day, for 6 years.  I was much younger then, and it was a requirement for the clean room in which I worked.  Those cheap paper ones they push are actually called "spit-shields" because all they really do is catch saliva that spews out when you talk.  They filter nothing.

Help with what? @libertybele  It's a damn virus.  We either build herd immunity or we live this way for the rest of our lives.

We've a much better understanding of how the virus works, have developed new therapeutics to treat the disease (Exhibit A:  The viral load was erased in three days in a 74 year old man) and vaccines are nearly ready for distribution (yes, to those who want them).  The Trump administration has just made a deal for distribution of the vaccine to seniors through CVS and Walgreens.

My point is:  The most vulnerable may need to exercise some caution .... as they do during the seasonal flu season .... but everyone else needs to drop the fear and fully live again.

Even the vulnerable shouldn't have been forced.  It is still ridiculous around here -- I called to try to make an appointment to see a specialist and because I have a heart condition I was told I could only do a tele health appointment.  So, how are they going to review my MRI films from a distance and coordinate with another specialist??  So waiting to hear back from the new patient guru to see if they'll make an exception. 

I have no doubt that shutting down society is killing more people than COVID itself.

Just wait till flu season -- every flu case will be treated as COVID.

I can't disagree, but I also can't unring a bell.  It was supposed to be 2 weeks to flatten the curve and this has morphed into until we have zero infections.

Except for N95s.  I have a box, had it before the virus hit, and it does stop viruses, says it on the box.  Of course, if someone wearing it keeps touching/adjusting it, moves it up and down while people are near, the purpose for the mask is defeated.  Doctors are wearing N95s, plus a face shield.  HOWEVER, READ THIS:

This is what happened when I went to an orthopedic pain doctor about three months ago and I do not see this doctor anymore but not due to this situation:

I did wear an N95 and face shield since numerous people in physical trouble were there.  I am in the examining room.  He comes in with a floppy thin material mask on which won't stay on his face.  It kept falling off his nose/off his mouth and he kept pulling it up and this happened continually while I was in there.

This was not a large room as most examining rooms ARE small.  If he had the virus, he would have given it to any patient he saw as there was about 3 feet between him and the patient, and I was the patient, but I had the N95/face shield on.  Plus, if a patient had the virus and not wearing an N95 (and few people have them) the doc was totally unprotected with the thin mask falling down all the time and would get it.  Neither did he have medical gloves on.  He should have had medical gloves on and change them before seeing the next patient.

GOING TO THE DENTIST:
I have developed a TMJ problem so went to a dentist.  Of all people, praise a dentist to keep his/her office open during this time.  A dentist is going to be inches from a patient's mouth - that takes courage; I don't think I could do that.  I had on an N95, but it had to come off.  When I entered the "small room" with the dentist chair there, they had me rinse my mouth with a mouth wash, and that was all.  Both the dentist and the woman assistant were right there in front of my mouth; if I had the virus, they surely would get it - how could they not with my breathing inches from them?  They could also give it to a patient being so close to them.  I don't have an answer how dentists and their patients keep from passing the virus.

Your N-95 medical masks are designed to be worn in sterile environments such as operating rooms in hospitals.  Outside of such places they are good for about 15 minutes tops.  After that, they are doing you more harm than good.

No, as I have already shown you, an N95 is nothing special. And a face shield, in forward motion, creates a roil behind the shield, just like a wing does... rendering it useless for protection for infection through eyes.

HOWEVER, READ THIS:

Meh. My brother is a chiro in Nashville (a supposed 'hot-spot'). Sees many people a day. Wears no mask or any other PPE. Just washes between patients and wipes down rooms with chlorine.

He is tested weekly. He has yet to become infected. If he is infected, he'll take the time off for quarantine, and then right back at it.

We are also a 'hot-spot' right now in MT. I don't wear a mask, nor does my family. We're all pretty sure we'll take the risk of not being in the 99.04 % recovery category...

You've a better chance of getting killed by a car than you do the Rona.
