Love Marshall Tucker... 24 hours at a time

Back in the '70's when I was onboard USS Ranger (CVA-61) A couple of us got tickets to go see Marshall Tucker at the Winterland West in San Francisco.  We got there in time for the opening act, which turned out to be the debut on the West Coast of a brand new band, Lynyrd Skynyrd.  They played 3 encores that night, and it was such a kickass show that Marshall Tucker was far too mellow by comparison, so we left early and went drinking instead....

I was a concert hound when I was younger.  Friday nights at Cleveland Public Hall, $5 admission, three bands...I saw J. Geils Band so many times I was sick of them.  Sha-Na-Na used to open for almost everybody and they kicked ass live.  Mott the Hoople, David Bowie and I have seen Stiv Bators and The Dead boys live.  I saw Ravi Shankar along with John McLaughlin and the Mahvishnu Orchestra open for Frank Zappa and the Mothers down at Kent State (how's that for a combination??).  I attended the S.N.A.C.K. Sunday concert at Kezar Staduim.  I caught ZZ Top at Erie County Field House in Erie Pennsylvania, and I saw Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon tour at the Cow Palace in Daly City, California.  I saw Warren Zevon live at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, and saw Bruce Springsteen play a gig there when he was being sued and couldn't perform for money.  We saw the Squirrel Nut Zippers live at the Oregon State Fair.  I caught AC/DC here a few years ago at the Rose Garden when an attorney friend mentioned she had the firm's box seat key that night, and we also got free seats to catch Joe Cocker opening for Tina Turner there once too, and that was an amazing show.  We saw Steely Dan outdoors at the Rose Garden here and an outdoor venue in North Carolina.  We saw the Brian Setzer Orchestra here in Portland a few years ago for a raucous New Years Eve show, and of course the Portland Jazz Festival is always good for too many shows to count.

Just to name a few....

We still like live shows but our tastes have changed considerably.  The Missus and I love live opera when there is something decent and there are always a variety of shows of all kinds to see here year round at several different venues.

But nothing, repeat, nothing will ever top the Dark Side of the Moon concert....ever.

Guns N' Roses - This I Love

For some reason the radio stations refuse to play anything off Chinese Democracy, but there's a lot of really good music on it.
It is almost a law of history that the same wealth that generates a civilization announces its decay. For wealth produce ease as well as art; it softens a people to the ways of luxury and peace and invites invasion from stronger arms and hungrier mouths.

Yeah, Hawkshaw was a good friend of Hank's-- he had the unfortunate duty of telling the crowd that Hank was supposed to perform for the night he died that he had died.

Hawkshaw's one of those underrated singers that was able to bridge the gap between the Hank Williamses and the smooth, Nashville-sounding types like Jim Reeves and Patsy Cline. I'm just now starting to discover his music.

Alas, he and Patsy died in the same plane crash. He does have a son, who seems to have inherited his voice.
