Members of Black Lives Matter Chicago issued a statement following a night of looting and violence, saying, "Black lives are and always will be more important than downtown corporations."
"In a predictable and unfortunate move, [Mayor Lori Lightfoot] did not take this time to criticize her officers for shooting yet another Black man. Lightfoot instead spent her time attacking 'looters,'" the group said in a Monday statement. "The mayor clearly has not learned anything since May, and she would be wise to understand that the people will keep rising up until the CPD is abolished and our Black communities are fully invested in."
The widespread destruction in Chicago early Monday reportedly left an estimated $60 million in damages and 13 police officers injured. Hundreds of people smashed windows, looted stores, and confronted officers Sunday night, including in one incident in which police returned gunfire on a suspect.
A Ronald McDonald House, which provides resources to families with children receiving medical treatments, was also among the places targeted during the violence and looting.
