De Blasio says he’s got ‘no respect’ for NYPD union leader amid public feud and rising crime

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who has had a contentious relationship with his police department practically since his first day in office, said Thursday he has “no respect†for an NYPD union president who has ripped him often in the past.
“The [Sergeants Benevolent Association] has only practiced division, they foment hatred … they do not try to help us move forward,†de Blasio said of the SBA during his daily press conference, the New York Post reported.
“They don’t try to create anything good. I have no respect for the leadership of the SBA,†he added.
The union is led by Ed Mullins, a frequent critic of the mayor who has called him a “liar†and “a disgrace†in the past over his decisions to handcuff police officers with his policies while coddling violent demonstrators.
In February, for instance, Mullins said rank-and-file cops were “declaring war†on the de Blasio administration after two officers were ambushed within a 12-hour period.
“Mayor DeBlasio, the members of the NYPD are declaring war on you!†the union tweeted. “We do not respect you, DO NOT visit us in hospitals.â€
