Atlanta Police Chief Ericka Shields voluntarily stepped down from the city's department Saturday afternoon following the deadly shooting of 27-year-old Rayshard Brooks Friday night outside of a Wendy's drive-thru.

Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms announced Shields' withdrawal from the department during a press conference Saturday, while also calling for the "immediate termination" of the officer who shot Brooks.

"Chief Ericka Shields has been a solid member of APD for over two decades and has a deep and abiding love for the people of Atlanta. And because of her desire that Atlanta should be a meaningful model of what reform should look like across this country, Chief Shields has offered to immediately step aside as police chief so that the city may move forward with urgency in rebuilding the trust so desperately needed throughout our communities."

ATLANATA — The Georgia NAACP has called for the immediate resignation of Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields the morning after a black man was killed in a confrontation with Atlanta Police.

Rayshard Brooks was killed outside a Wendy’s Friday night after police investigated him for sleeping in a car. Brooks and police got into a scuffle in which Brooks apparently got one of the officer’s Tasers, the GBI said.

GBI Director Vic Reynolds said it appears the Brooks ran from the officers, but then turned back around and pointed the Taser at them before officers shot him.

Chaos erupted in Atlanta on Saturday evening following the death of 27-year-old Rayshard Brooks, who was fatally shot by police following an incident in a Wendy’s parking lot on Friday.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, authorities on Friday responded to a complaint of a male in a vehicle “parked in the drive thru asleep, causing other customers to drive around the vehicle.” Authorities had the man perform a field sobriety test, which he failed. Thereafter, officers tried to take the man into custody, but he “resisted and a struggle ensued,” causing an officer to deploy a taser, which the male subject “grabbed and was in possession of.”

Wendy’s announced earlier this month that it would donate $500,000 to help the black community and promised “to amplify Black voices” on its Twitter account — before being targeted by rioters in Atlanta, Georgia on Saturday night.

Protests erupted in outrage over the shooting death of 27-year-old Rayshard Brooks, who was killed in a confrontation with police Friday in the parking lot of a Wendy’s. Brooks allegedly resisted arrest and took an officer’s taser as he fled.

Earlier this month, Wendy’s had backed the Black Lives Matter movement that mobilized after the killing of George Floyd, a 46-year-old African American man, in police custody in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Wendy’s joined many other corporations in making large donations to organizations and voicing its support for the movement on social media.

The guy was bigger and stronger than either cop,full of adrenaline,and on drugs.

Pretty hard to subdue someone like that while following the current rules.

The safest thing to have done was hit him with the stun gun,but that can't be done anymore unless he is resisting arrest,and the other cop couldn't do it at the beginning because he wasn't resisting. By the time he was resisting,he couldn't do it without also zapping the cop that was wrestling with him.

Still,there was no justification for shooting him. They had his car,his ID,and they knew where he lived. The worse that would have happened was it would have taken them a few days to arrest him.
Big flipping deal.

HOW was it justified? The guy was running away,and wasn't even pointing a lethal weapon at him.

It is only a justified shooting when you shoot because either your life,or the life of others are at immediate risk if you don't.

Nobody's life was at immediate risk,so it wasn't justified.

1. I am looking at the same videos as everyone else. First, this looks nothing like the George Floyd case, which was an obvious killing. Mr. Floyd was on the ground, face down, handcuffed, pleading for his life. The Rayshard Brooks situation is nothing like that.

2. Although more information will become available, when I first heard Mr. Brooks's lawyers at about 9 PM eastern last night, I concluded a man was shot in the back while fleeing. But the publicly available videos tell a different and more complete story.

3. It looks from the videos like Mr. Brooks resisted being handcuffed, assaulted the police officers (punched one of them), and then turned and aimed the taser at the pursuing officer as Mr. Brooks was fleeing, which he’d forcibly taken from one of the officers.

4. I don't know if the officers followed protocol . But I do know this is why we have a justice system -- with a real court, a real discovery process, and lawyers, to gather the facts and pursue the truth.

5. And we should wait for all the facts to come out here, not the kind of narrative I heard last night from the lawyers, and not just selected video of Mr. Brooks fleeing the scene without any context -- which we are seeing over and over again on cable TV today .

6. Meanwhile, a lawless crowd burned down the Wendy's restaurant, which had nothing to do with the confrontation. The police chief resigned. And the officer who discharged his weapon was fired.

As an aside, all of us know that when an officer stops you, you cooperate.

7. You certainly don't resist arrest. And you certainly don't assault the officer and seize one of his weapons. The officer doesn't know you. He doesn't know if you're dangerous to him or others.

MeeToo.  I'm pissed that nobody ever seems to care about what leads up to these events.  I've been stopped, I've been arrested and it never, ever occurred to me to run away or turn and start fighting a cop with my fists (even while drunk).  It's just not in my calculus, and that appears to be a different operating paradigm than what these shooting "victims" have.

Since you mention that, I'd like to see the toxicology report when it comes out.  That guy in Minnesota's report was interesting, because it's hard to imagine a drug he didn't have in his system.

We have a local organic farmer who also hosts entertainment; primarily country & western.  The owner called the BLM movement a hoax and stated that "All Lives Matter" and held an event ... large protests are now under way surrounding his business. He is now labeled a racist. Go figure.  How is saying "all lives matter" racist??

So it's All Lives Matter v. Black Lives Matter, but the people who are promoting for all life, are the racists! You are correct, if you weren't racist before, that door is definitely swinging wide open.

That the officer has to protect his pistol is something I have not seen in these discussions, and I think that's a shame.  In how many cases has the "victim" been killed after making a play for a gun?  Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, that guy recently in Georgia that got shot in a botched "citizen's arrest," all tried to disarm the person who shot him.

A responsible carrier always has in mind the need to keep his/her weapon out of the hands of somebody who will first use it on you, and will then use it to harm or kill others.  That gun in your holster is the most important you have on you, for many reasons.

He was less than a car-length away when the perp shot the taser at the cop.  It was not a "hand held taser weapon," it was the kind that shoots a distance.  Fortunately, he fired it while running and it went over the top of the officer's head.

Edited to Add:  If I were the Cop I'd have probably broken off the chase after the discharge of the stun gun because they're one-shot deals, and it was no longer a threat to innocents.
