Coronavirus cases have yet to spike in US areas reopening, HHS head says

Officials have yet to see coronavirus cases spiking in states that are reopening, although it's still too early to determine such patterns, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said on Sunday.

“We are seeing that in places that are opening, we’re not seeing this spike in cases,” Azar said on CNN’s “State of the Union” program. “We still see spikes in some areas that are, in fact, closed.”

Azar said it will take time to identify and report new cases throughout the U.S., according to Reuters. The virus reportedly has up to a 14-day incubation period, which could also create a delay in determining when people might be infected.

Until 14 days or so (what seems to be the average incubation period -- I think there are cases as low as 2 days and as long as 37) have elapsed from the reopening, the lack of a spike in cases is not an interesting thing to point out.

If 14 days after a state or county has reopened there is no spike in cases, then we'll have something with which to flog the folks who want us to stay shut down until there's a vaccine.

But some of these states have opened up partially for two or more weeks now. (Plus the average incubation is closer to 6 days, meaning between that and faster, more widely available testing, an increase should have been seen by now.) So far, no major outbreaks have happened any more than in the still-locked-down areas.
