Sunday on MSNBC’s “AM Joy,” former Obama National Security Advisor Susan Rice said that President Donald Trump’s “extraordinary failings” caused an increase in deaths and economic suffering during the coronavirus pandemic.

When asked about Jared Kushner calling the federal government’s coronavirus response “a great success story,” Rice said, “Well, it’s really offensive when you digest the reality that now nearly 70,000 Americans have lost their lives. As you said, well over 1 million infected, 30 million Americans have lost their jobs. We know that number is an underestimate. How one could possibly declare that a success of any sort, mission accomplished is just bewildering, and it is offensive because so many Americans are suffering. We’re suffering loss of life, loss of loved ones and the degree of our suffering in human terms and economic terms is, frankly, far greater than it needed to be because of this administration’s incompetence, the president’s denials and dishonest statements and their refusal to act on the information they had a beginning in early and mid-January when we learned this was a major problem in China. Any person with knowledge and experience of pandemics knows this was going to come to us in a major way.”

Reacting the president saying the Obama administration left “bad, broken tests,”  Rice said, “It’s, of course, preposterous. The notion that we left them faulty tests when we left office in January of 2017, and there wasn’t a novel coronavirus to test for at that time is false on its face. But the broader narrative that somehow the Obama administration left this new administration unprepared is ridiculous. First of all, this is 3 1/2 years into the Trump administration. They own whatever the situation is. Secondly, we understood very clearly the real likelihood of a pandemic. President Obama spoke to it publicly in December 2014 as we were wrestling with the Ebola epidemic. I set up an office at the White House, solely for the purpose of tracking global health events and possible pandemics and responding to them. We left them a 69-page playbook, which I called “pandemics for dummies,” which was designed to enable an administration to walk through a set of issues and questions and begin to prepare a response.”

  • I was a "conspiracy theorist". Now I'm just right.
We knew, from a number of outbreaks, about Ebola.

This was something entirely new.

The Obama Administration and other Democrat run jurisdictions failed to replenish stocks of masks and other PPE they were supposed to have on hand, and left a gross shortage in stockpiles. If the people responsible for restocking those supplies when that happened are still around, they should be given their pink slips and escorted from the building, unless someone diverted their funds before they got them, in which case, they should go.

While Tump has been sorta effective, He's set himself up to be the bag-holder. They're gonna play it.

They were gonna do that anyway. Unless, of course, the results were spectacularly good, and there were enough foils in place to prevent that.

That's right.

  • Well EXCUSE me!
Didn't I just read that the CDC dropped the deaths down from 63,000 to 29,000? And one has to wonder just how accurate the 29K number is.

Maybe..but they didn't. In fact they are looking for more dead people to credit to COVID-19.

I should have questioned the source at the time, but that doesn't mean I buy the CDC's inflation either.

Nor I. They went looking for more dead to blame the Virus on, citing "excess deaths" (above average) but I think they might be ignoring the heart patients who coded at the scene or en route who got no further treatment in NYC, and a host of other folks who didn't seek medical attention because 1 they couldn't see their doctor in person, or 2 were not going to go into an ER they felt might be filled with 'plague' victims.

So, while some of the local COVID-19 protocols may have actually cost lives of people who didn't have the disease, perhaps in greater proportion than illness as usual, I really don't think COVID-19 should be written in as the cause of death, even though the presence of the disease in the community may have contributed to the patient dying of something else.

Perhaps, in the future, hospitals where there are more than one can be designated to receive suspected COVID (or the new bug) patients, and others can do other medicine while still screening for the disease in question.

One place in the whole country with virtually half the cases and half the deaths...
I was expecting statistical correlation in other old cities with the same basic parameters... Detroit, Chicago, Philly.... NOPE.

Not even close.

Never exceeded 80% of bed and ICU capacity... Had no effective need for Sam's Purse and the Mercy ship...  Even coroner/morgue has not hit capacity.

Gee, you think somebody's got a sharp pencil? Really?
