NYPD mourns 2nd coronavirus death; 550 police officers have COVID-19

The NYPD announced Friday night that a second civilian employee infected with the coronavirus has died.

Giacomina Barr-Brown worked in the roll call office at the 49th Precinct in the Bronx, and became the second NYPD employee to succumb to the virus in as many days.

On Thursday, the department announced the death of NYPD custodian Dennis Dickson, who worked at Police Headquarters for 14 years.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said at his Friday press briefing that the coronavirus pandemic is beginning to hit the city’s government employees.

At his daily press briefing, de Blasio said the pandemic has killed employees in several city agencies, including the departments of education and transportation, and the NYPD.

More than 1,000 uniformed NYPD members test positive for coronavirus

The NYPD said on Tuesday that 1,048 uniformed members and 145 civilian members of the department have tested positive for the coronavirus (COVID-19) — which accounts for 15.6% of its workforce.

The latest number of positive tests is an increase of 263 total members of the NYPD since a day ago, when 930 total individuals within the department tested positive, the Advance/SiLive.com reported.

The number of uniformed employees on sick report within the NYPD rose from 5,199 approximately 24 hours ago to 5,647 on Tuesday, the NYPD said, rising from 14.4% to 15.6% of the uniformed workforce.
