Ya think?  Dry air.  Cool temperature.  What's there for a virus not to like?

With the added benefit if ensuring all the saliva-droplet laden air moves all around to every nook and cranny.

Gee..... that means that stores, restaurants, hotels, hospitals, and every other building is dangerous to be in during warm weather.

So what exactly does this ‘shocking’ news have to do with staying at home??  *****rollingeyes*****

Air can spread COVID-19.

Hot humid air saturated with UV rays from the sun cannot.

Of COURSE you can have safe AC in your own home!

The only danger will be in stores and public buildings, which was my point.

This is not 'bad news' for staying at home, but a caution for opening things up.

But they'll open up because it's what every sane person wants to do.

btw, you could always move to Ohio.  We have a temperate climate here and won't need AC for quite a while.   :patriot:

If you live in an apartment building—as a large proportion of people who live in major cities do—you're not any safer at home than you are outside. That's what it has to do with staying at home.

TRUE. HVAC normally shares a common intake. And while zoning is usually per-apartment, nothing really impedes airflow.

There has been no restriction on going outside here.  If you live in a duplex or single family home it's still much safer to be at home than in a store or business.  Even if you're in an apartment with individual units, you're safer there.

But going outside is probably as important as anything to maintaining mental health, regardless of 'safety.'  I've been out for walks pretty much every day, and that's been encouraged by everyone I know.  As the weather here has gotten warmer, we've been doing a lot of yard work as well.  Also encouraged.

But at any rate, my point remains.  The AC information has very little relevance to whether or not it's been wise to stay at home.

I have never lived in an air conditioned house.

Our AC hasn't been run since last September.

And if it gets hot any time soon, the windows will be opened and the fans will bring the fresh air through the house.

There is a certain contingent of harpies out there that seems to insist we must remain holed up in our domiciles until it is "safe," that any step outside sheltered walls is a risk. I post this to dispel that myth.

It is more important to stay away from other people than it is to stay in one place for months on end, which will do more harm than good.

All I’m encouraging is a bit of balance.  I’m not sure who these ‘harpies’ are (that’s an unpleasant TOS flashback), but if I were you, I’d stop listening to any of them.  They’re fools.  And none of them hang around here.

Get out as much as you can. Go to a park if you don’t have a yard.  Go to a store whenever you feel like it.  Talk with neighbors and friends.  But whatever you do, try to stay positive for the sake of your mental health.

I’ve seen a lot of negativity, hostility and mockery around here lately, and it’s not good for anyone.

This will be over soon, perhaps with a slightly new normal, but it WILL be over.

What we need to do is take care of ourselves until then.

And to be clear, I wasn't pointing that comment at anyone on this board. There are a lot of trolls on the Internet, and between heightened tensions and everyone being online it seems, I see a lot more of them as of late.

The comment is more in reference to people who comment on local news sites' Facebook pages. I don't take them seriously, but it is nice to have a little evidence to refute them so that others don't blindly follow their lead.

Parks?  The only parks that they've opened around here are nature preserves -- well I was excited, except I got eaten alive by all the mosquitoes. Mosquito control I guess is shutdown.  City council was supposed to "talk" about opening the actual parks around here, but haven't heard a word.  One beach opened up in the county for residents only that live on the beach -- no sunbathing. Parks with playgrounds will continue to stay closed -- and only those who live in the neighborhood of certain parks are allowed to walk them -- parking lots at those parks will continue to be shutdown!

We have been prohibited from visiting families IF we don't live in the household.  No more than a gathering of 10 -- but social distancing of 6 feet.  People have been stopped in their vehicles and questioned as to where they are going and for what purpose.

So .... it's becoming ridiculous.  Less than 1% of the population in this county has been infected and we remain tightly shut down.

I guess it depends on what state you live in.  There's only one State Park that's been closed the whole time here, and that's one that has really narrow trails with cliffs.  All the rest have been open with the only restriction being no congregating at pavilions and playground areas.

And things are going to start opening up this week, with businesses opening up on Monday and retail stores in another week.  I guess that's maybe why I don't feel as discouraged as some of the rest of you.  I think things are being handled well here with a balance of safety and restoring the economy.

We're definitely not "tightly shut down."

Maybe the rest of y'all should move.  wink777

I'm not sure what method hospitals use (or even if they do) but perhaps businesses should consider UV germicidal lights in their HVAC?

A coil sterilization UV light runs 24/7 and is the most common type of HVAC UV light. It is also the most reasonably priced. In Air Sterilization, a complete UV light unit is installed that sterilizes moving air. The UV light unit is installed in the return air duct and cycles on with the air handler blower.

UV light destroy microbes in air conditioners. The lights are installed in your ductwork or near the AC coil, and they destroy microbes like mold, bacteria, fungi, mildew, mold spores and viruses in the line-of-sight of the UV bulb. ... Maintenance is also easy: Just change the bulb when it burns out.

And, most of all,  if there are no UV lights in return air ducts whatever gets picked up in one part of the building is soon spread throughout the entire building.

I wish I had enough faith in that.

I live near the NY-PA border. Tom Wolf said he was going to begin the process of reopening PA on May 8, but Cuomo—even though he said he was going to coordinate this with the neighboring states—isn't budging from May 15 and is also dropping hints he might even stretch that further in harder-hit regions (he also noted that construction and manufacturing are the only businesses he'll open on the first step and won't consider any others until May 29). Of course, I happen to live in a region that, despite a number of active cases I can count on my fingers, is tethered to Buffalo, which is still struggling to rein this virus in. (Unlike the state as a whole, there's been no appreciable decline in hospitalizations there.)

Part of it is that as a musician/entertainer of some repute around here who relies on performing as a substantial portion of my meager income, these lockdowns have been especially hard on me. I was very lucky that I ended up winning a prize in a talent competition just a few days before everything started getting canceled. But with the "attractive nuisances" prohibition Cuomo's proposing, I might not have any more chances for a long while other than in front of a webcam.

Me neither... But then I suppose there are folks down south who have never been in a heated house

That's where you are wrong. There are people in the south who have never been in a house that WASN'T heated.

That's right... But that ain't the point... If it gets hot enough for air conditioning, I am on the water, not in a danged ol house.

Be it a tube with a cooler tied on down a lazy river, kayaking or canoeing down white water (with a cooler attached somewhere), maybe a john boat fishin for bass back in the sloughs and pot holes (cooler... see the pattern?), on a pontoon as a card carrying member of the Redneck Yacht Club, or even sitting on a dock fishin for rainbow down on the Swan River... Air conditioning sure as hell ain't on my mind.

I have never lived in an air conditioned house.

I've lived in a climate-controlled house.  Whatever the climate was outside, that's what the climate was inside.

Hurray!!!  Finally!!!! They just announced that they are re-opening the parks!!!  Playgrounds in the park will remain closed, but bicycle paths and walking trails will be open!!!  I am doing a Happy Dance and can't wait to go to one of the parks tomorrow!!!  The neighborhood beach and pools still remain closed.  Kayaking/canoeing allowed too.

Ten miles in any direction and I am in one big ol park. They closed down the parking and pavilions and folks just laughed at em and went anyway...

Kinda like anywhere else that stayed open.

Has it occurred to this tweeting person that the reason that so few people have died may well be that we DID shut down when we did?

With the red states opening up their economies (as they are), the blue states will most likely follow and the economy will recover.  It hasn't been "killed."

And I'm glad that with over 3 million infected in the world that so few Americans have died.

Great Point @musiclady

I believe President Trump has saved tens of thousands of lives by his actions and leadership, but because of my admitted TDS I don't think my opinion is acceptable to some hardcore Trumpers.  Hopefully my gratitude for the American people following his advice isn't misconstrued as support for China somehow.

I've lived in a climate-controlled house.  Whatever the climate was outside, that's what the climate was inside.

In SoCal w/o AC it gets hot inland. Like inland from Pasadena to Phoenix.

As a kid in North OC, my Mom knew just how to do it. Keep windows open all night, but close them and retain the cool air in all day also keeping all drapes closed. Also fans indoors.

Finally do like the cats and dogs, namely stay stilll, dress lightly.

Just finished watching the President's Press Conference.  He was in control and measured.  One of his best performances.  He said a lot of stuff I wanted to hear.  Pence was good too.  I missed Dr Fauci.

@Hoodat

The house I grew up in wasn't insulated, and built from wood that washed up on the beach after a storm. No sub-floor,just floor, with the planks all spaced with a small gap so they wouldn't swell. On top of this was a roll of linoleum.

The only heat in the house was a kerosene furnace sitting in the living room, and it was strictly radiant heat because my father was too cheap to run the fan. He was also too cheap to turn it up past the minimum setting that kept your breath from showing when talking. His POV was "If you are cold, put on more clothes or go to bed and wrap up in the quilts."

It wasn't unusual to wake up in the morning to get ready for school, and see the glass of water I left sitting on my dresser the night before frozen.

The floor so damn cold bare feet would cramp up when they touched it,and AFAIK,nobody had ever heard of "bedroom shoes". If you couldn't wear it outside,it didn't get bought.
