Peter Sellers on steroids? You just sold me on this show @sneakypete

Btw, every December Hulu runs a special for new subscribers. $1.99 a month for a year. Best Buy ever, I did this last December, and I’m happy with Hulu even though I watch Netflix more.

@Gefn

Hulu,Netflix,and Amazon Prime are my primary rental "go to" channels.

I know this is going to make the heads of "the righteous" explode,but I also watch a LOT of PBS. NOBODY does historical drama better than PBS,NOBODY!

It just occurred to me the other day that now that I have access to literally thousands of channels,both free and fee-based,and not a single damn one of them is a porn channel.

If that ain't proof a man is getting old,I don't know what is.

ROFL!

Happened to have 'stumbled' onto LILYHAMMER, on Netflix.

It's a dark comedy about a fixer for the New York City mob who gets double crossed by his boss and turn's State's evidence and chooses to go to Norway for a new beginning.

Absolutely hilarious, because it actually slapstick 'Sopranos'.

Woke up this morning and started laughing while still in bed...soon as I thought of him.

I like PBS. I grew up watching Sesame Street and Fred Rogers, and I still watch. I like “Antiques Roadshow” and they do have good dramas on Sunday night. I just saw a series on mental illness last week which was really good.

@Gefn

I started watching PBS waaaay back in the 60's,when the tv viewing schedules were pretty damn slim,and all the tv's were still in black and white. Mostly out of boredom and having nothing else to watch or do.

I would tune in and there would be a program starting about truly boring crap like "The sex live on the Argentinian Serial Killer Butterfly (or some such mind-numbingly boring title),and damned if it wouldn't pull me in within 15 minutes and make me wonder why I never thought it wouldn't be interesting.

Then I discovered things like Masterpiece Theater,and was hooked.

Flat out,you see VERY interesting things on your local PBS station that you will NEVER see anywhere else. For this alone,it earns every tax-payer dollar it costs.

ANYBODY that can watch a series like MI-5,Danger UXB,Poldark,Unforgotten,Victoria,Ripper Street,Wolf Hall,Les Misérables (the drama,NOT the freaking musical!),Prime Suspect,with Helen Mirren!,Wallander,etc,etc,etc, and can then tell you it is boring and not worth the taxpayer money is either a fool or a liar.

 Quite possibly both.

The first two “Masterpiece Theatres” I can recall seeing would be “upstairs downstairs” and “I Claudius”

It was “I Claudius” that made me love history. So much so I minored in it.

@Gefn

BTW,ever watched the British version of "A Tale of Two Cities"?  I watched this the first time before I had even heard of PBS. Somehow or another,I managed to tune in to Masterpiece Theater back when it was being broadcast on CBS,ABC,or NBC,I don't remember which,when I was maybe 7 or 8 years old. This was responsible for me getting my first library card so I could read the book to see if I had missed anything

Been a history freak ever since.

Not to mention a MAJOR fan of Masterpiece Theater. There just ain't nothing broadcast anywhere that is any better when it comes to production,writing,or acting.

Even saw the Masterpiece theater production with Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean doing "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" LIVE from a stage in NYC sometime in the mid to late 50's. That was some impressive stuff for a little kid!

You KNOW this stuff was good when it was broadcast in black and white all those years ago,and I can STILL close my eyes and picture some of the scenes.

Chemo will make you "DUM" dumb.  I used to half-joke that it was a good thing my truck had the system (forgot what it is named AS I was getting ready to type it!). Ok,it just popped back into my head. On Star. I used to tell people it was a good thing my truck had On Star so I could get back home if I forgot how to get there.

You need one of these. I'd send you mine, but it was a gift from a co-worker friend and means a lot to me.

I posted a thread about it in SPORTS, early this morning .

It's not going to be a series, but a movie.  And young 'Tony' looks exactly like his father.

...coming in October, this year.

I dug up the original "The Stand" miniseries from 1994.
Watched the first two parts Sat/Sun, and will watch the last two next weekend.

It seems ok, although I would have preferred less of the supernatural theme.
But it's Steven King, and I guess with him, that's what you get.
(I was never interested in his books).

The whole Mother Abigail vs Randall Flagg thing was the essence of spiritual warfare, only with apocalyptic and fleshly undertones. 'Supernatural' was part and parcel of the story, good vs evil.

I just got a email notification that Brit Box is now airing all three seasons of "Luther".

You just GOTTA see Alice to believe her.

I STRONGLY recommend this series to everyone.

Luther is a homicide detective with the British Police,and he meets Alice when her parents are discovered to have been brutally murdered.

Idris Elba's best role, IMHO.   And "Alice" was incredible in it.  Watched it a couple of years ago when it was available on NETFLIX.

Just finished watching a one season series called SOMOS...on Netflix.  Based upon true events.  Closed-Caption Spanish to English.

It's about a Mexican border town, Allende, when a drug cartel deals with double-crossers and anybody that helped them.

Highly recommended to show you the atrocities going on there still today.

I had never seen him before,or even heard of him,but he sure is one HELL of a fine actor!

I have seen Ruth Wilson in a BUNCH of series,and she flat eats the scenery up every time she walks in front of a camera.

Even has a few romantic leads,and she has a "duck bill" face.

One thing is for sure,and that is it doesn't take long before you understand how such a big and strong man can be scared of a little woman. Her smile,when she is "on camera" is scarier that most women's shrieks of horror and outrage.

He was high in the running to take over the James Bond role after Daniel Craig began to show disinterest.

Check him out in THE TAKE - also on Netflix.

I think he started with The Wire. I do know he was also on The Office for a bit. He’s currently doing a podcast with his wife and I saw good reviews but I didn’t subscribe. I’m listening to too many podcasts.

@sneakypete

He was high in the running to take over the James Bond role after Daniel Craig began to show disinterest.

Check him out in THE TAKE - also on Netflix.

@DCPatriot

Unless he loses his mind and goes all "Prima Donna" on producers and directors,he is never going to suffer from a lack of offers of starring roles. He really IS that good.

Yes, he's a fantastic actor. IIRC he is also a conservative.

@BassWrangler

He must be. He speaks like an educated man,and never seems to make a big deal about skin color,one way or the other.

He is obviously smart enough to realize the one thing he ain't is a "victum".

I think he started with The Wire. I do know he was also on The Office for a bit. He’s currently doing a podcast with his wife and I saw good reviews but I didn’t subscribe. I’m listening to too many podcasts.

@Gefn

One of the greatest series of all time. I somehow managed to miss or forget him. Must be because that series was so overloaded with some of the best actors and actresses in the biz that it was impossible for anyone to stand out.

He couldn't have gotten his start on The Wire,though. For one thing,he is British,so he would have climbed his way up the ladder starting in the UK. For another,The Wire was so well-written and so stocked with primo actors the producers wouldn't have hired a rookie for a starring role.

I may check the IMDB later on to see where he started,but it's not really important because he is now "THERE".

No,he is NOT a conservative.

I just checked his bio on the IMDB,and he came out in support of the Labour Party as well as against the UK leaving the European Union during the last elections.

In other words,he is a "leftist loon" in his private life.

Maybe it's the same in Britain...if you want to work and be a star, you cannot advertise your 'Conservative' bent.

I dunno for sure,but I suspect being a leftist loon is more acceptable as mainstream in GB than it is here. Don't forget,the Socialist Party has been a power in GB since at least the 1930's.

@BassWrangler

I agree,and since he seems to keep his private life and beliefs in the background and separate from his acting career,frankly,I don't give a damn.

Besides,if you will notice,there is a shockingly large number (not really shocking) of Brits that suddenly become conservatives and anti-socialism once they become millionaires.

Remember the Beatles line  from "Revolution"

"You say you'll change the constitution
Well,you know
We all want to change your head
You tell me it's the instituion
Well,you know
You better free your mind instead

But if  you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao
You ain't going to make it with anyone anyhow..."

And this was from the most popular "hippy" band of the 1960's. Truth to tell,maybe the most popular band of all time. They literally changed the face and outlook of Rock and Roll.

Funny how going from living in publik housing to riding around in your chauffer-driven Rolls can change your outlook,ain't it?

BTW,you might also want to give a listen to this one by Alvin Lee,one of the greatest blues musicians of all time. It's from the same time period.

I love that song and have listened to it (and various covers of it) hundreds of times, but you know I never paid attention to all the lyrics. That first verse is definitely not PC.

The song was a recurring theme, in a number of variations, of TV series "Legend", which I highly recommend if you haven't seen it. Here's one version:

In a lighter, simple fun vein, I just got done binge watching The Color of Magic which was light-hearted fun, is suitable for youngsters who aren't really squeamish, and not peppered with salty language.

Alvin Lee was clearly a visionary,in addition to being one of the greatest blues guitarists that ever lived.

I'll have to check out his other stuff. Fortunately, I got Spotify so that's easy to do.

Not getting much sleep lately...so when I find myself wide awake in the middle of the night, I watch another episode of MANIFEST.

It's a series about passengers on an airliner going from N.Y.C. to Jamaica who mysteriously go missing for 5-1/2 years and suddenly return.

Kind of lost interest when I read that NBC canceled the show after Season 3, and left all the mysteries and plot lines dangling.

@catfish1957

I stopped watching it when that happened,too.

Chances are someone is going to pick the show up and keep airing it on a "lesser channel" where they don't HAVE to pull in so much money to justify keeping a show on the air.
