We have no idea what the mortality rate is here until we know how many are infected, which we do not.

I trust no data coming out of China.

So I'm not sold on this being different from a bad flu epidemic.

And I think that's the crux of the panic - people saw all the anecdotal info coming out of China via social media, and it wasn't good.

Everyone knows China is lying thru their teeth. Nobody believes that so few died over there, especially now looking at places like Iran and Italy.
The Republic is lost.

How about this!?

  • If I feel sick, stay at home.  Check.
  • If my children are sick, keep them at home.  Check.
  • If someone in my home has tested positive for coronavirus, keep everyone at home.  Check.
  • If I am an older person, stay at home.  Check.
  • If I am a person with a serious underlying health condition, stay at home.  Check.

Simple enough.
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.     -Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."     -Ayn Rand-

I got it covered. I just need to drop a line to my liquor store to order a fresh keg of beer and I'm all set.  It's Netflix and Chill time for us.  I've run out of bleeps to give now.

We're kinda hanging out there right now, being in a new town and starting up a new business, and this 'shelter in place' order has some potential to cause us some serious trouble.

Plus I know quite a few people who live hand to mouth and now will not be able to work for three weeks.

Talked to a local liquor store owner today and he mentioned the possibility that the store might be "shut down" here in Texas, as well.   He owns several stores around the country.  So I'm making a trip tomorrow by there to get a bottle or two.   What the hell.

He also said they had to close the BR there due to not being able to get TP or cleaning supplies.  I guess the employees there just bring their own TP?   Getting weirder.

This lockdown is actually working against us getting control of the virus.  The way to stop this virus is to develop a herd immunity.  Our most vulnerable --- our seniors and all with underlying medical conditions -- should continue to self-quarantine until the herd immunity takes hold..

But businesses and schools should reopen ... and if you and your family are well,  get back to work and get back to school.  Employers/schools can provide hand sanitizers, medical grade gloves, cans of Lysol.  Monitor your health ... but resume life.

Oh, and turn off ALL news shows.

Early US Coronavirus Patients Have Fully Recovered: Health Officials
Epoch Times, Mar 16, 2020

Patients across the United States who earlier tested positive for the new coronavirus have fully recovered.

Maryland’s first three patients have fully recovered after becoming infected while on a cruise on the Nile River. “I’m happy to report that the first three cases reported last Thursday have all been cleared to return back to their normal daily schedules,” Montgomery County Health Officer Dr. Travis Gayles said in a video update.

The trio included a couple in their 70s and another unrelated person in their 50s.

Health officials across the country have reported patients fully recovering. About four out of five patients don’t require hospitalization, according to data gleaned from cases around the world that’s been widely cited by U.S. health officials.

A Washington state resident who was the first person in the state to test positive for COVID-19, the disease the virus causes, “fully recovered” in late February, health officials said.

That man became infected after traveling to Wuhan, China, the epicenter of the new illness, in January. He was isolated at Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett on Jan. 21 and released into home isolation on Feb. 3. “He is now considered fully recovered and free to go about his regular activities. We cannot thank him enough for his patience and cooperation throughout the entire process,” the Snohomish Health District said in a statement.

The Tulsa Health Department in Oklahoma said last week that the state’s first confirmed patient recovered from COVID-19. The patient tested negative twice, “which is the indicator of recovery,” the department said in a statement.

Officials in California, Nebraska, Illinois, and Arizona have also reported patients recovering from COVID-19. Experts recommend staying home if sick and contacting your doctor or health authorities.

Just need beer, the spare is empty and I just tapped a new one a couple days ago.  I'll be set for 6-8 weeks.  The whole rest of the bar is well-stocked, maybe I'll have to try some of that weird shit Mrs. Liberty bought?

People who are very old are going to die of something in the not too distant future. Flu is a common illness that pushes them over the edge. So a lot of elderly people that were on the edge prior to getting the flu get reported as dying from the flu. The vast majority of people who get the flu don't go to a doctor or hospital so there's no record of those people regarding flu statisics.

This is affecting younger healthier people not already on the edge.

Italy's hospitals were dealing with people who got the flu before this all came along. They had enough beds and resources. That has changed dramatically as this new illness has taken root there.

The difference is plain to see if you are willing to look.

It would be nice if those who wish to see this as a apocalyptic event could do so without dragging the rest of us who do not into the it-shay with them.

Travel bans from infected regions, fine. Advise from the CDC, great. This and just a little personal common sense is all that is needed and the world will continue to turn as before.

What is happening now is compounding the problem exponentially.

I don't think it is apocalyptic. Common sense went out the door a long time ago. My only beef with you is claiming this is no different than the flu that was already going around. It is different and a threat to people that the common flu posed little threat to.

I'm not justifying shutting down everything, especially with the heavy hand of government. There is middle ground.

The kind @mountaineer bought for her Avatar?

I keep a six of Blue Moon as backup to the Shock Top I get by the keg.  I have not had to touch the long-necks ever since I got the larger Kegerator that can hold two kegs, other than the one or two I stashed in the upstairs refrigerator for whenever I want a beer and don't care to make the hike down to the main bar in the Living Room (an admitted "first-world problem").  I always have a spare in reserve, 'cause ya never know, and it can take a week to get a keg in this small town.  A man's gotta keep his priorities straight.

ETA:  I could always spring for a third keg, I have that extra Kegerator in the guest bedroom closet.

I just haven't seen anything, besides the over the top reaction, that would indicate to me this is anything other than virulent new flu. But that doesn't even matter - it sounds like you and I agree about what would be the proper response.

Its frustrating because I believe there are some bad actors in government and media who plan on using the public mood they've whipped up to get some policies etc passed they would ordinarily have no chance of getting passed.

Well, I can... in a pinch.... substitute Dos Equis.   But I'm not really a beer drinker.   Two at one time is my limit and I usually only drink it in the summer...when I'm outside....always ice cold.

That Democrats would keep this good crisis from going to waste is a given, talking about "bad actors."  Well, they aren't going to panic me into forgetting about my stocks of brew.

Oh you just know those bad actors (deep state fascists/elitists) are wet-dreaming, as we speak, about the coming recession/depression (like they've been trying to talk us into for the past several years).... and in their wildest fantasies, perhaps the need for declaring martial law.   We know how their little minds work by now.

Unfortunately this has opened the flood gates for massive D.C. spending by both parties. They love to spend money. Lots of money. The more, the more power they feel while the rest of us get further enslaved and devalued.

We're basically about 2 months into this being an issue, and it wouldn't suprise me if 100K or more are dead in China already.

And the median age in China is about 10 years younger than a good chunk of Europe.

I like BevMo.  We dropped about $2K there when we stocked the Castle Bar.  They even had my Absinthe, French for about $65 for a Fifth.

I hope all this forces a major realignment between the world and China. China is the root cause of all this. There needs to be some serious consequences along with decoupling of our industry.

There won't be.   Look what merely imposing tariffs, to make the trade more equal, has resulted in.   Anything harsher would probably result in all out war.   Something everyone in DC wants to avoid, at all costs.   Nah....the ChiComs are like the DemocRats in that respect.   Teflon coated and consequence-proof.

We'll see. There are tons of businesses that are likely rethinking their Chinese investments right now and actively looking for alternatives.
