According to the WHO 290,000 to 650,000 people worldwide die from the flu. Thats about 25k & 55k per month.
Perspective.
People who are very old are going to die of something in the not too distant future. Flu is a common illness that pushes them over the edge. So a lot of elderly people that were on the edge prior to getting the flu get reported as dying from the flu. The vast majority of people who get the flu don't go to a doctor or hospital so there's no record of those people regarding flu statisics.
This is affecting younger healthier people not already on the edge.
Italy's hospitals were dealing with people who got the flu before this all came along. They had enough beds and resources. That has changed dramatically as this new illness has taken root there.
The difference is plain to see if you are willing to look.
