Online engagement drops for Senate impeachment trial
By Rebecca Klar - 01/26/20 01:38 PM EST

Online engagement for reports about the start of President Trump’s Senate impeachment trial was significantly lower than during  the start of the House hearings, Axios reported Sunday.

There were 17.8 million interactions on stories about the trial last Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, according to the news outlet, which data shared by NewsWhip.

Stories during the first three days of the House impeachment hearings, however, resulted in 32.5 million interactions on social media, according to the NewsWhip data.

Just three out of the 25 stories about Trump with the most online attention during the first three days of the Senate trial were related to impeachment, Axios noted.

The trial could wrap up this week, depending on whether the GOP-controlled Senate votes to compel witnesses and documents. At least four Republicans would need to join all Senate Democrats to approve the effort.

The House passed two articles of impeachment against Trump at the end of last year, charging him with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
