They did not do it for 362 deaths.  They did it to prevent +100,000 deaths.
My cousin who has lived in China up until a few months ago, just got his wife and children out of there in the last couple of weeks.  He said his wife and kids were basically locked in their Beijing apartment for 3 weeks.  His comments were that what's going on in China is MUCH worse than is being reported.

Thanks for the info -- I think most suspected that this was the case.  The Chinese are notorious for under reporting their problems; unfortunately, it could turn out to be the World's problem.

My daughter was to fly back to China in a couple of weeks, but she was informed this AM that her flight has been cancelled. The city she lives in, in central China, also has people staying in their homes, so her university's schedule is likely to be changed.

I know, you were talking about her, I tried to follow the story, I thought she was at home for the holidays OR was coming back soon from China.

@TomSea, I appreciate your prayers! She is a university student in Xining. She moved there in 2014 and spent a couple of years learning Mandarin before starting at the university. She came here for a visit during the winter and New Year break, arriving just as news of the virus was emerging.

Russia's Putin proposes stripping pharmacy licences for raising anti-virus mask prices

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday proposed stripping pharmacies of their licences if they raise prices for anti-virus masks amid the coronavirus outbreak.

I think I agree on this one... raising the price could happen here too.

Drudge Report has some stories up on this from the Daily Star.... I won't post those. They are hard to verify but they are out there.

I do not agree.  That which many call price gouging is the way the market works to get supply to an area of higher need for a product.

When the hurricane is coming, or the day after it arrived, generators should be priced what the market will allow.  Demand quadruples or increases by a thousand times in that location.  If the price doubles, that allows a small operator to rent a truck, drive to another state and bring back a truckload of generators.  Generators that would not be there the next day if prices stayed the same.  Generators that are badly needed by those who did not prepare in advance.

You want a standard priced generator, buy it before you need it.  You want a generator after the emergency is already here, pay the inflated price.

If prices do not rise, extra supply does not arrive.

I would rather buy a double priced generator than not be able to buy any regular priced generator because they already sold out.

Plywood, sheetrock, germ masks, whatever.  Let the market work it out.  Anti-gouging laws always end up with people needing products that they cannot get when they need them.

Quit asking the government to solve your lack of planning and preparedness.

N. Korean military smuggles in S. Korean face masks
Masks are for military units near Pyongyang and their labels were removed before being distributed to soldiers
By Jeong Tae Joo -
2020.02.05 2:00pm

A trading company affiliated with the Ministry of People’s Armed Forces, the military’s main logistics agency, recently smuggled in large amounts of health masks produced in South Korea, Daily NK has learned.

The smuggling operation appears to have been undertaken by the military as part of efforts to ensure soldiers are protected against an outbreak of the Wuhan coronavirus, which continues to spread in China and around the world.

The Kimbongsokyong Trading Company reportedly sent a request to Chinese traders for “South Korean-produced products [masks]” through a “customs office in Sinuiju,” according to a source based in North Pyongyan Province on Feb. 3.

Saw this as the last stat...."China coronavirus cases now top 20,000, with 425 dead"

This seems consistent with the 2% Mortality rate that has been previously reported, and isn't much higher than potent flu strains we often see in this country.

Does anyone have any data, that this virus is mutating into a deadlier strain?  If not, I hope cooler heads will prevail, and we carefully and methodically contain.  (Just in case)

Hand washing is always important.
It seems basic and obvious, yet people convey pathogens from surfaces and other humans by touching their face, mouth, nose, and eyes, (not to mention food) and do so far more often than they realize.
Just washing your hands before you handle food can make a huge difference.

Taiwan News By Keoni Everington 2/5/2020

https://www.taiwannews.com.tw/en/news/3871594

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — As many experts question the veracity of China's statistics for the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak, Tencent over the weekend seems to have inadvertently released what is potentially the actual number of infections and deaths, which were astronomically higher than official figures, but are eerily in line with predictions from a respected scientific journal.

As early as Jan. 26, netizens were reporting that Tencent, on its webpage titled "Epidemic Situation Tracker" was briefly showing data on the novel coronavirus (2019nCoV) in China that was much higher than official estimates, before suddenly switching to lower numbers. Taiwanese netizen Hiroki Lo that day reported that Tencent and NetEase were both posting "unmodified statistics," before switching to official numbers in short order.

Left to right are "nationally confirmed cases", "suspected cases", "cured", and "deaths".

This was posted in the large thread.  We will allow it here for the time being. Perhaps a merhe this evening.

After thinking about it, I'm not sure of it's significance. I was told Tencent is a newspaper I think. Or maybe news channel.

Drone captures eerie scenes of coronavirus-ravaged Wuhan
By Yaron Steinbuch
February 6, 2020 | 9:55am

Haunting drone footage shows the largely empty thoroughfares in the coronavirus epicenter city of Wuhan, a sprawling metropolis of 11 million residents that appears to have been transformed into a ghost town.

The video — posted on Twitter by ABC News — captures a variety of eerie scenes, including one bridge with a handful of vehicles, another that is devoid of traffic, a lone car on a six-lane highway and the airport at a standstill. ...  More and link to video at NY Post

Interestingly enough, I saw a sign on twitter, image, that had as one precaution to open doors and door knobs with your elbows. Then, it went on to say, you can't touch your face with your elbow. So, that's interesting, I can kind of see how that works even though it sounds goofy.  I am keeping sanitizer around which certainly is not perfect but it is still something.

Doctor who sounded alarm on coronavirus dies

Li Wenliang, a doctor in China who was allegedly detained for warning others about the coronavirus before he himself was sickened by the illness, has died. His death was confirmed during a World Health Organization (WHO) press briefing on Thursday.

We're very sad to hear of the loss of Dr. Li Wenliang," WHO officials said.

Li had claimed that he shared his concerns via private chat with medical school graduates after several patients exhibited symptoms similar to SARS before he was detained by authorities. He later tested positive for the virus.

I don't know about you guys, but where I live, I'm getting conflicting information about the risk of getting the coronavirus.  On the one hand, local news is reporting the local health department is advising people to forget about the coronavirus and get their flu shots.  We've had several flu-related deaths here locally, although most of the victims were the elderly and/or people with existing illnesses.

But then the national news frowny-faced anchors are carrying on about the coronavirus as if we are all going to die.  So who do I believe?

If it bleeds, it leads.  CoronaVirus can kill, is new, so it is going to be the news topic.

For me, one of the advantages of winter is that I stay home when the weather is nasty.  So I'm less likely to be exposed to the flu or the coronavirus than most people who work, go to school or are otherwise out in public.

I do have one question -- don't know if it's already been asked -- I got the flu vaccine in September -- will it protect me from the coronavirus?

Not at all.  It does not even protect against every type of flu virus.  Each year they tailor it to match the more common types that year.

...It’s possible to get sick with flu even if you have been vaccinated (although you won’t know for sure unless you get a flu test)....

...You may be exposed to an influenza virus that is different from what is used to make seasonal influenza vaccine. There are many different influenza viruses that circulate every year. An influenza vaccine is made to protect against the three or four influenza viruses that research suggests will be most common....

The flu shots already given are not for this virus.  A vaccine has not yet been developed.

@Cyber Liberty

Thanks fellas.  I do know the flu shot doesn't even protect against the flu entirely, let alone the coronavirus, but I thought maybe having had the vaccine might lessen the coronavirus effects as the flu vaccine sometimes does for strains other than the ones the vaccine is designed for.  Learned something today, so the day wasn't a total waste.  LOL

CHANGCHUN, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- A Hangzhou runner named Pan Shancu ran 6,450 circles around two beds in five hours at home; a Xi'an runner, Cheng Dadu, continuously ran 100km in the living room; a mother Tan Xue, finished a half marathon at home and posted on social media her race bib, drawn by her son.

Although many people in China can not go outside due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, "home marathons" have become a new option for many Chinese runners during this time.
I am not and never have been a leftist.

Could Japan call off Tokyo Olympics over coronavirus fears? | DW | 07.02.2020
Deutsche Welle (www.dw.com)

With less than 6 months before Japan hosts the opening ceremony for the 2020 Olympic Games, the coronavirus that has erupted in China has cast an early pall over the 17-day event. Julian Ryall reports from Tokyo.

The latest figures available indicate that over 600 people have died in China to date, making the virus more lethal than the SARS epidemic of 2002-03, which killed a total of 349 people in China. Authorities say that more than 30,000 people are known to have been infected, with some experts warning that the exact figure could be much higher.

Twenty-two people in Japan are being treated for the illness, some of whom are Chinese tourists who were taken ill after arriving in the country, and with little sign that health experts are bringing the outbreak under control, there have already been rumors that the Japanese government is considering cancelling the Olympics.

Sieren's China: Coronavirus — an epidemic of rumors

In the coronavirus crisis, false information, discrimination and conspiracy theories have been spreading faster than the virus itself, says DW’s Frank Sieren - both in China and around the world.

The World Health Organization has warned of a dangerous "infodemic." Indeed, the rapid spread of panic, false information and racist prejudice triggered by the virus is alarming. All over the world, people who look as if they could be Chinese or of Chinese descent have reported incidents. In Rome, a bar near the Trevi fountain put up a notice banning Chinese customers. In Berlin, a young Chinese woman was attacked and had to go to hospital. These are just two examples found under #iamnotavirus hashtag.

Li Wenliang: Coronavirus death of Wuhan doctor sparks anger
Quote
The death of a Chinese doctor who tried to warn about the coronavirus outbreak has sparked widespread public anger and grief in China.

...

Last December he sent a message to fellow medics warning of a virus he thought looked like Sars - another deadly coronavirus.

But he was told by police to "stop making false comments" and was investigated for "spreading rumours".

"I don't think he was rumour-mongering. Hasn't this turned into reality now?" his father, Li Shuying, told the BBC. "My son was wonderful.

We hear about this doctor, he was an ophthalmologist. One probably does not know his story too much beyond scant articles and stories.

Chinese Doctor Who Blew Whistle on Virus Dies After Treatment 'Delay'

A whistleblowing Wuhan doctor hauled in by China's state security police after he and colleagues tried to warn the authorities about the coronavirus has died of the disease, sparking an outcry on the country's usually tightly regulated social media platforms.

Li Wenliang, 34, was one of eight medical professionals in the central Chinese city of Wuhan who tried to warn colleagues and others about a newly discovered virus similar to SARS amid silence from health officials.

After he reported that seven patients had contracted the virus, he was visited on Jan. 3 by police, who forced him to sign a statement admitting to having spread "rumors."

Seoul Government Inspects Find No Evidence of Bat Meat Being Sold in Traditional Markets
GIKorea | February 8, 2020 | Korea-General Topics | 2 Comments

At least it appears that Korean traditional markets are not selling bat meat which is what is believed to have caused the coronavirus outbreak in China:

The Seoul Metropolitan Government conducted a rare inspection of restaurants in the city’s three major traditional markets, Wednesday, for the possible illegal consumption of bat meat, as part of its efforts to prevent the spread of a coronavirus, according to city officials.

On Wednesday, three additional cases of infection were confirmed here, putting the total number at 19.

The inspection team consisting of city officials overseeing hygiene matters, police and consumer rights activists looked into restaurants in Daerim Central Market in Yeungdeungpo, Gyeongdong Market in Dongdaemun and Joyang Market in Gwangjin; areas that are frequented by Chinese immigrants and tourists.

The Sun.co.uk ran a story on the Pangolin earlier and I thought, must be sensational but now I do see another story. These stories assert the Pangolin would have been an intermediary with bat  meat.  These pangolins, the scales are trafficked illegally into China. They see some value to them. Stories have been posted here on this smuggling.

The pangolin is considered the most trafficked animal on the planet and over one million have been snatched from Asian and African forests in the past decade, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Pangolin identified as potential link for coronavirus spread
(Agence France-Presse) - February 7, 2020 - 5:13pm

BEIJING, China  — The endangered pangolin may be the link that facilitated the spread of the novel coronavirus across China, Chinese scientists said Friday.

At least 31,000 people have been infected and 630 killed by the virus, which has spread to two dozen countries.

Researchers at the South China Agricultural University have identified the scaly mammal as a "potential intermediate host," the university said in a statement, without providing further details.

Revenge of the pangolin, I thought it has been awful what they've done to them.

The article goes on to say, they are used in Chinese medicine and their meat is eaten.

Fifteen Repatriated North Korean Refugees Kept Quarantined for Coronavirus in ‘Dangerous’ Tuberculosis Hospital
2020-02-07

As the coronavirus epidemic rages on in China, authorities in North Korea have quarantined a group of 15 refugees that were captured in China and repatriated with the help of Chinese police, placing them in a facility meant to isolate patients with open cases of tuberculosis, RFA has learned.

Sources say that the government has little regard for the health of the refugees, and does not care if they contract tuberculosis while under quarantine for the novel coronavirus (nCoV).

“Yesterday an acquaintance of mine who works in the medical industry told me that some North Korean refugees who were sent back from China last month were put in isolation at a tuberculosis hospital,” a resident of North Hamgyong province told RFA’s Korean Service Thursday.

I thought of that, some of these quarantine centers in themselves seem dangerous.

Is China Using Coronavirus to Cover up Uighur Deaths?
Published February 7th, 2020 - 08:20 GMT

Highlights
Uighur Muslims with relatives held in Chinese 'concentration camps' say they live in fear the government will pin the deaths of their loved ones on the deadly coronavirus.

The families of Uighur Muslims held in internment camps are worried that China will pin their deaths on the fast-spreading coronavirus, which has killed over 560 people and infected tens of thousands, a UK publication revealed in interviews with family members.

Uighur activist Bahram K. Sintash told Metro that the fate of his father, journalist Qurban Mamut, who was taken to one of camps in 2018 remains unknown, and that he fears authorities will use the coronavirus spread to cover up his death.

Sintash, who lives in the US, has been unable to speak with his father for two years, after the Chinese government cut off all communication from the camps.

Have any of you ever read The Stand?

One thing about this I've read is that bats don't succumb to disease because they only give enough immune response to fight it off, whereas humans are drama queens that go full bore till it kills them.

Which, if this was an experiment, you wonder if they were trying to cause the same thing in humans as bats. Alot of wealthy longetivity types sure would be interested in that.

I don't know if this is legit or not but this is what I saw:

Guo Wengui, 73rd richest man in China:says: The Chinese regime has hidden the facts about the #coronavirus. More than 50 thousand corpses were burned in 49 crematoriums in the city of Hubei alone and said that the number of people infected with the virus in the country is 1.5 million.

Much more likely closer to the truth than what China claims. Where are the world's journalist exposing the lies??? This is a big deal. Letting China get away with this charade is unforgivable.
