Dow posts worst day since October and turns negative for the year as coronavirus fears grow

Stocks tanked on Monday after more cases of the coronavirus were confirmed over the weekend, ratcheting up worries over the virus’ impact on the world economy.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 453.93 points, or 1.6% to 28,535.80, wiping out the average’s gains for the year. The 30-stock average also notched its biggest one-day fall since October along with its longest losing streak since August. The S&P 500 dropped 1.6% to 3,243.63, snapping a 74-session streak without a 1% decline. The Nasdaq Composite had its worst day since August, dropping 1.9% to 9,139.31.

There are 2,862 confirmed cases so far in China and the death toll in China has risen to 81. The World Health Organization’s director general is traveling to China to meet with government and health officials. In the U.S., a fifth case of coronavirus was confirmed over the weekend.

Chinese Authorities Manipulate Tally of Confirmed Coronavirus Cases by Controlling the Supply of Diagnosis Kits

The outbreak of Wuhan coronavirus is far bigger than the official figures released by Chinese public health authorities who cover up the severity by limiting the number of diagnosis kits to Wuhan hospitals, according to an insider and an independent journalist.

The insider and the independent journalist both say that diagnosis kits are only provided to certain “qualifying hospitals” and in very limited quantities. Medical personnel at these hospitals have said that the number of kits they are supplied is less than 10 percent of what they need to test patients.

Now these hospitals claim that their responsibility at present is to provide treatment only, and they will not perform any diagnoses. Patients who are seeking a diagnosis are unable to get one and find themselves in a desperate situation.

China Restricts Medical Supply Donations, Despite Dire Need During Viral Outbreak

Beijing has banned private charities and volunteers from entering Hubei Province, the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak, or sending materials to hospitals directly.

It’s unclear why authorities made the decision.

Meanwhile, Chinese netizens complained on social media that officially sanctioned charity organizations were complicated and slow in their processing, delaying shipments to hospitals in Hubei.

This last one, good point if true, why keep charities out of a place!!!

Lastly, yes, 3 countries that I'm aware of have closed the border to China, that being North Korea, Mongolia and ??? I don't know the third one. Russia has a border with China, maybe they are doing it.

#Wuhan BSL-4 Research Laboratory was using a bat-derived SARS-like #coronavirus to test it's disinfectant procedures in 2018. Genetic sequencing of 2019 Novel CoV suggests the current virus is extremely similar. Proximity of the Research Lab to outbreak origin deeply troubling.

Over the weekend, the company said that it was closing shops and suspending delivery services in the city of Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak, and the wider Hubei Province.

John Culver, the company's international president, said that the "situation accelerated" over the past few weeks, adding that Starbucks is evaluating closures "each and every day." Stores that are open still offer delivery, he said.

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Australia will help some citizens leave Hubei province in China, the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak, and quarantine them on Christmas Island, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Wednesday following a briefing by the Chinese government.

“We have taken a decision this morning to prepare a plan for an operation to provide some assisted departures for isolated and vulnerable Australians in Wuhan and the Hubei province,” Morrison told reporters in Canberra.

Morrison did not say how many of the 600 Australians registered in the Hubei region the government would be able to help, adding Australia would also be working to help New Zealand and Pacific island citizens in Hubei.

Plane carrying US evacuees from China amid coronavirus outbreak diverted to California air base


A plane carrying about 210 U.S. citizens evacuated from Wuhan, China—the epicenter of the deadly coronavirus—has landed in the U.S. after it was diverted Tuesday to California’s March Air Reserve Base "for the logistics that they have," an official said.

The Boeing 747 with red and gold stripes and no passenger windows was initially headed to Ontario International Airport in California. It landed in Alaska at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport on Tuesday night -- before it refuels and makes its way to the base.

British Airways ceased all of its direct flights to and from mainland China amid the coronavirus outbreak -- with the decision coming after the United Kingdom advised against "all but essential" travel to the rest of the country on Tuesday.

When logging into BA.com, the official website for the airline, it currently shows no direct flights to the country -- with a posted notice, "Sorry, there are no direct flights for this route, flights with connections are below."


“We apologize to customers for the inconvenience, but the safety of our customers and crew is always our priority,” BA said in an emailed statement to Reuters on Wednesday. “Customers due to travel to or from China in the coming days can find more information on BA.com.”

First Cases of Coronavirus Reported in Middle East, UAE Confirms

The United Arab Emirates on Wednesday confirmed the first cases in the Mideast of the new Chinese virus that causes flu-like symptoms, saying doctors now were treating a family that had just come from a city at the epicenter of the outbreak.

The UAE’s state-run WAM news agency made the announcement citing the Health and Prevention Ministry, but offered no details on where the stricken family lived nor where they were receiving treatment.

It also did not offer a number of those afflicted by the virus, other than to say the cases came from "members of a family arriving from the Chinese city of Wuhan."

Man gives 500 face masks for coronavirus to police, runs away: Video

A Chinese man ran into a police station, left 500 face masks to help combat the coronavirus, and then ran away, showed unverified video circulating on social media on Wednesday.

The video, shared by users on Twitter and published by several media outlets, reportedly shows a man at a police station in Anhui Province, which borders Hubei province to the west. The capital of Hubei, Wuhan, is the site of the deadly outbreak of coronavirus, also known by many as corona.

Footage shows a man running into a police station and leaving what appear to be masks on the country. Two policemen are then seen chasing the man, apparently to thank him for his gesture. The two policemen then salute into the distance.

Apparently a lab test. A lab test that is in very short supply. So there can't be more official cases than there are lab tests to confirm the virus. In other words, it is seriously under reported because a great number of people are unable to get a lab test to make it "official" and are seriously ill while not being counted.

I'm wondering how sensitive that test is as a person can have the virus without symptoms -- so how would they even know to test until after symptoms have appeared.  Considering that 100's of Americans for that area of China have just been flown into CA -- I'm hoping that they will be quarantined for a period of time?

Your healthcare provider may order laboratory tests on respiratory specimens and serum (part of your blood) to detect human coronaviruses. Laboratory testing is more likely to be used if you have severe disease or are suspected of having MERS.

BEIJING/GENEVA (Reuters) - Foreign governments flew their citizens out of the epicentre of China's coronavirus outbreak on Wednesday, as the number of deaths jumped to 133 and the World Health Organization voiced "grave concern" about person-to-person spread in three other countries.

The WHO said its Emergency Committee would reconvene behind closed doors on Thursday to decide whether the rapid spread of the new virus from China now constitutes a global emergency.

"In the last few days the progress of the virus especially in some countries, especially human-to-human transmission, worries us," WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a news conference in Geneva, naming Germany, Vietnam and Japan.

"Although the numbers outside China are still relatively small, they hold the potential for a much larger outbreak."

There have been 6,065 cases of the flu-like virus in 15 countries worldwide - all but around 70 in China - according to the latest WHO figures. All the deaths so far have been in China, where the National Health Commission said there had been 132 fatalities as of end-Tuesday. On one chart of China, the numbers are jumping by about 90% every two days.  I trust the Chinese as far as I can pick the nation up and throw them.  Whatever they are reporting you can bet the numbers are many times greater than reported.

Israel reported the only bio lab at present in China is in Wusan, and 2 + 2 = massive mistake or sabotage/or who knows what?  I heard somewhere that internal Internet chatter in China is implying the USA unleashed a bio weapon on China.  Uggh!  I think the time has come to begin reversing what Nixon started.  The USA has paid handsomely for China's rise, and why continue with the stupidity?  Trump has it right, choke down on China.

Until they adhere to intellectual property rights, frankly, I think we should have a five year plan to end trade as we know it with China.

Back to the virus, it is here, and I see it being hard to contain with the unlimited travel into the USA.

A woman from Taiwan managed to avoid a planned trip to Wuhan, China — the source of the current coronavirus outbreak — thanks to her Golden Retriever, Kimi.

The virus was first reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) on Dec. 31, 2019, and was being monitored throughout early January, but no alarms had been raised before Kimi's owner went to book flights on Jan. 13 to visit Wuhan.

When Kimi's owner came home, she saw that Kimi had chewed and destroyed her passport, and was furious. She posted the photos to her Facebook, showing how not a single page in the passport remained intact.

6,000 passengers held on cruise ship in Italy as Wuhan coronavirus fears spread

Hong Kong (CNN)Six thousand people are being kept on a cruise ship in Italy as one passenger shows symptoms of the Wuhan coronavirus, while Russia is shutting its border with China to stem the spread of the outbreak.

The number of cases of the virus that originated in the Chinese city of Wuhan has shot up by 30% in just a day to more than 7,700 on the country's mainland. Elsewhere, more than 100 people have been infected in 20 countries or territories across North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

 Most concerning, instances of human-to-human transmission have been reported overseas, including in Germany, the first such case in Europe.

A spokesperson for Costa Cruises told CNN that a 54-year-old woman was showing symptoms of the virus, namely a fever.

"All the other passengers are, at the moment remaining on board," the spokesperson said.

At least 90 nurses took sick leave on Wednesday at three Hong Kong hospitals, ahead of a potential strike planned by a health care workers’ union in protest at the government’s response to the coronavirus.

The Hospital Authority confirmed the action, with many of the nurses upset at the refusal to close all border crossings as suggested by lawmakers and workers’ unions to guard against the spread of the deadly new virus, according to a source familiar with the situation.

Of those that called in sick, 26 work at Pok Oi Hospital in Yuen Long, while 41 were based at the intensive care unit or operation theatres at the Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in Chai Wan. Another 23 took sick leave at Princess Margaret Hospital in Kwai Chung.

Amen, close the stinking borders, the Nurses surely are at more risk but the risk goes for everyone. What if someone crossed the border with this? USA has already suffered from strains of virus coming in from elsewhere, Central America I'm thinking, in the past.

Listened to Glenn Beck just a few minutes ago. Had Senator Cotton -- Trump and Cotton went to restrict and shut down travel from China -- DEMS are accusing them of being against the Chinese people!


They are estimating that this could wipe out 10% of China's population.  That is huge.

This is exactly why we've only taken one cruise. My husband became very sick on board and they were going to air ambulance him to the nearest hospital if he didn't improve -- cruise line blamed it on something he picked up off ship - I think it was something he picked up on ship. 

What part of being in closed quarters with several thousand people don't people get?  These cruise ships are nothing but a germ and virus carrier and this is now a nightmare waiting to happen.

The coronavirus is now spread via human to human contact.  Is that touching something that they've touched or is this virus airborne?

Sorry - left out a bit of information.  They were comparing this to SARS which killed 10% of the people infected --   some are saying this isn't as bad as SARS but keep in mind that many more people have been infected.

I commented to the same effect on another thread.  I think the big question is the degree of how rapid and severe the rate of mutation of the virus.  One of my first jobs out of college long  long ago had epidemiological  responsiblites in data collection and reporting to CDC. 

One of the things they will be watching very carefully is the incident death rate among non-suscpecible demographics (very young, elderly and comprimised immune systems). 

So far, I don't think we have enough informatiion to determine whether we have at one side, an overhyped non-event like the '70's Swine flu.  Or the other like a 1918 Spanish Flu outbreak.
