China is very probably lying about the number of deaths. It isn't likely they'd quarantine 50 million people for 50 deaths - especially in China. The flu kills far more.

You can't trust anything coming out of China.

Add to that... the fact that China couldn't care less about loss of human life.... they have way too many people already... they probably wouldn't mind losing a hundred million or two (they have 1300 million population) of their own people if they could create a similar problem in their enemy nations.  I think we probably should consider this an act of war.  A subtle, passive aggressive one, but still war.

Quick burials and lack of tests raise fears coronavirus outbreak is much bigger than China admits

The corpse of Chen Min was wrapped in a yellow body bag with tape when it was delivered to the funeral home by workers in hazmat suits. The staff disinfected the van they travelled in and disposed of protective gear.

Despite being pressured into a quick cremation by authorities, the grieving family did not know if the 65-year-old had died from the novel coronavirus sweeping China. And they still don't.

Official figures estimate that 41 people have died so far and 1,300 have been infected. But experts at Imperial College reckon as many as 9,700 could have come down the disease.

The swift disposal of Ms Chen's body raises further questions about the scale of the problem.

No, especially not on a virus that incubates 10 days to 2 weeks, is contagious before it's symptomatic, and started in a city with a level 4 viral research lab.

And with the possibility that hundreds of potentially infected Chinese are on their way or arriving in the USA... as we speak.

A large number of the population has to be infected in order for so many people to have arrived in other countries in such short order. Wuhan is a large city of millions of people. The people who traveled to other countries from there has to be a tiny percentage - yet that tiny percentage was infected.

The Chinese are lying big time.

The real question is how deadly is this virus??? Was it natural or man made???

And if it is particularly deadly China may be at the crossroads of a great upheaval.

With the west finally beginning to push back against their unfair trade practices and now this I agree there may be a perfect storm brewing for the Chicoms. Chinese social media may provide some validation of that - there's alot of anger there.

Virus-hit Wuhan has two laboratories linked to Chinese bio-warfare program

The deadly animal virus epidemic spreading globally may have originated in a Wuhan laboratory linked to China’s covert biological weapons program, according to an Israeli biological warfare expert.

Radio Free Asia this week rebroadcast a local Wuhan television report from 2015 showing China’s most advanced virus research laboratory known the Wuhan Institute of Virology, Radio Free Asia reported.

The laboratory is the only declared site in China capable of working with deadly viruses.

Dany Shoham, a former Israeli military intelligence officer who has studied Chinese bio warfare, said the institute is linked to Beijing’s covert biological weapons program.

Yes they are lying, but so is the CDC who is saying -- not to worry  - take precautions just like you would for the flu.  B.S.  I still think we are going to see a pandemic.

Alot of people got out of Wuhan before it was locked down...an estimated 5 to 9 million people. That's why China has 50 million locked down on quarantine now.

The Chinese govt has called it a grave situation, but no specifics. So yes they are being a little withdrawn on info and the truth.

And there is at least one level 4 biolab in Wuhan that deals in the nasty stuff, and they were warned about a breach potential two years ago.

China coronavirus 'spreads before symptoms show'

Fifty-six people have died from the virus. Health minister Ma Xiaowei told reporters the ability of the virus to spread appeared to be strengthening.

Several Chinese cities have imposed significant travel restrictions.

Wuhan in Hubei, the source of the outbreak, is in effective lockdown.

The infections were at a "crucial stage of containment", Ma Xiaowei said.

Officials announced that the sale of all wildlife in China would be banned from Sunday. The virus is thought to have originated in animals, but no cause has been officially identified.

In humans, the incubation period - during which a person has the disease, but no symptoms yet - ranges from between one and 14 days, officials believe.

Without symptoms, a person may not know they have the infection, but still be able to spread it.

Chinese Doctor Concerned That Wuhan Pneumonia Outbreak Will Get Worse

A doctor in Wuhan City who has been treating patients with Wuhan pneumonia disclosed some alarming information about the new virus, and expressed concern that the disease will be out of control in the next several months due to the authorities’ slow response and lack of transparency.

The doctor, surnamed Xu, spoke to U.S.-based Chinese media Secret China on the condition of anonymity on Jan. 24.

He disclosed that by Dec. 31, 27 patients were confirmed to have been infected by the coronavirus, but Wuhan’s public health officials decided not to inform the public of the new disease. Moreover, some features of the novel coronavirus make it more dangerous than SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome).

#CoronavirusOutbreak in China:
- 2,761 confirmed cases, including 17 in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan
- 80 deaths
- 51 cured
- 5,794 suspected cases

What alot of people don't understand, is that they think unless this is some kind of a killer virus like ebola with a high mortality rate then oh well it's not a big deal.

I've read unconfirmed reports that the kill rate for the virus is 15%, but for grins and giggles let's call it a nice round 10%.

----

I live in a county with 36K people...

If half are infected, that's 18K people...

If half of those get seriously sick, that's 9K people. Enough there to overwhelm the hospitals and probably about shut everything down...

If 10% of the infected die, that's 1800 people. We see an average of 25 deaths a week in this county. We don't have near the facilities here to deal with the bodies...

----

Bottom line is infection rates will be way higher in places like NYC v. rural Montana. The averages will be way skewed.

The ripple effects will be way beyond the death toll. Shortages, lost production, overwhelmed facilities, disruptiion of services, and who knows what kind of SHTF in the cities.

That why I take this particular outbreak seriously, because it seems highly contagious and slow to manifest, and the various world govts don't seem very quick on the stick in containing it.

I agree with your assessment. If anyone wants to understand the potential, look up the 1918 Flu Epidemic.

Local hospitals have very few beds in isolation, and chances are the infection would have spread considerably if it gets into a community by the time it is recognized.

Coronavirus Death Toll Rises to 80 as China Enters 'Crucial Stage', US Prepares Evacuation

Beijing: A new viral illness being watched with a wary eye around the globe accelerated its spread in China with 80 deaths so far, while the U.S. Consulate in the city at the epicenter announced it will evacuate its personnel and some other Americans aboard a charter flight.

China's health minister said the country was entering a “crucial stage" as “it seems like the ability of the virus to spread is getting stronger."

Ma Xiaowei declined to estimate how long it would take to bring the situation under control, but said travel restrictions and other strict measures should bring results “at the lowest cost and fastest speed.”

President Xi Jinping has called the outbreak a grave situation and said the government was stepping up efforts to restrict travel and public gatherings while rushing medical staff and supplies to the city at the center of the crisis, Wuhan, which remains on lockdown with no flights, trains or buses in or out.

Wuhan seafood market may not be source of novel virus spreading globally

As confirmed cases of a novel virus surge around the world with worrisome speed, all eyes have so far focused on a seafood market in Wuhan, China, as the origin of the outbreak. But a description of the first clinical cases published in The Lancet on Friday challenges that hypothesis.

The paper, written by a large group of Chinese researchers from several institutions, offers details about the first 41 hospitalized patients who had confirmed infections with what has been dubbed 2019-novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV). The earliest case became ill on 1 December and had no reported link to the seafood market, the authors report. “No epidemiological link was found between the first patient and later cases,” they state. Their data also show that in total, 13 of the 41 cases had no link to the marketplace either. “That’s a big number, 13, with no link,” says Daniel Lucey, an infectious disease specialist at the University of Georgetown

Earlier reports from Chinese health authorities and the World Health Organization said the first patient had onset of symptoms on 8 December—and those reports simply said “most” cases had links to the seafood market, which was closed on 1 January.

Lucey says if the new data are accurate, the first human infections must have occurred in November—if not earlier—because there is an incubation time between infection and symptoms surfacing. If so, the virus possibly spread silently between people in Wuhan and perhaps elsewhere before the cluster of cases from the city’s now infamous Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market was discovered in late December. “The virus came into that marketplace before it came out of that marketplace,” Lucey asserts.

And a more scientific treatment of the outbreak so far:

Clinical features of patients infected with 2019 novel coronavirus in Wuhan, China

Background

A recent cluster of pneumonia cases in Wuhan, China, was caused by a novel betacoronavirus, the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV). We report the epidemiological, clinical, laboratory, and radiological characteristics and treatment and clinical outcomes of these patients.

Methods

All patients with suspected 2019-nCoV were admitted to a designated hospital in Wuhan. We prospectively collected and analysed data on patients with laboratory-confirmed 2019-nCoV infection by real-time RT-PCR and next-generation sequencing. Data were obtained with standardised data collection forms shared by the International Severe Acute Respiratory and Emerging Infection Consortium from electronic medical records. Researchers also directly communicated with patients or their families to ascertain epidemiological and symptom data. Outcomes were also compared between patients who had been admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) and those who had not.

Global Health & Emergencies Advocate Peter Salama Dies At Age 51

WHO’s head of Universal Health Coverage, Dr. Peter Salama, has died suddenly at the age of 51.

The Australian-born medical epidemiologist was known as an eloquent global health advocate, who dedicated his career to combatting the world’s most difficult and dangerous diseases and strengthening fragile health systems in states weakened by war and civil unrest.

After joining WHO in 2016 as executive director of Health Emergencies, Salama oversaw the winding down of a massive Ebola epidemic in West Africa, only to be confronted two years later in 2018 with the re-emergence of the deadly virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

But he was well-prepared. During the 2013-2016 outbreak, Salama had overseen UNICEF’s response as Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa. Over three years, that epidemic  killed over 11,000 people, leaving behind ravaged economies and societies in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. Everyone knows the number is higher. The question is "What is happening to the patients? Are any treatments working against it?".

From what I can gather today, it's like the thing has frozen in it's tracks after the infected/deceased stats have been nearly doubling every day.

Gotta call BS on that.

Too many reports of infected people, some already symptomatic flying on planes back to their resident countries. If this thing is as contagious as reported, a close quarters air cabin on a long int'l flight is a perfect way to spread it.

Guess it's wait and see now.

U.S. State Department warns against visiting China, citing coronavirus

WASHINGTON, Jan 27 (Reuters) - The U.S. State Department on Monday warned against visiting China and said Americans should not travel to the Hubei province, given that the province's city of Wuhan is ground zero for a new deadly coronavirus.

The State Department has already ordered the departure of all non-emergency U.S. personnel and family members from the province and the "U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services" to its citizens there.

It said travelers should be prepared for the Chinese government to put travel restrictions in place "with little or no advance notice." (Reporting by Lisa Lambert and Makini Brice Editing by Chris Reese)

China coronavirus: Hong Kong medical experts call for ‘draconian’ measures in city as research estimates there are already 44,000 cases in Wuhan

*    HKU’s faculty of medicine dean Gabriel Leung says research shows self-sustaining human-to-human transmission is already happening in all major mainland cities
*    He called for measures to limit people’s movement, school closures, work-from-home arrangements and cancellation of mass gatherings

Hong Kong infectious disease experts are urging the government to take “draconian” measures against the spread of the deadly new coronavirus
from the mainland Chinese city of Wuhan, citing research estimating that 44,000 patients could be infected there – far higher than official figures.

University of Hong Kong academics on Monday estimated that the number of patients in Wuhan had reached 43,590 by Saturday, including those in the incubation stage of the virus, which causes pneumonia.

Mainland authorities have put the number of confirmed cases across the country at about 2,800 as of Monday, with the death toll at 82.

Hong Kong has eight confirmed cases of infection.

Dow posts worst day since October and turns negative for the year as coronavirus fears grow

Stocks tanked on Monday after more cases of the coronavirus were confirmed over the weekend, ratcheting up worries over the virus’ impact on the world economy.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 453.93 points, or 1.6% to 28,535.80, wiping out the average’s gains for the year. The 30-stock average also notched its biggest one-day fall since October along with its longest losing streak since August. The S&P 500 dropped 1.6% to 3,243.63, snapping a 74-session streak without a 1% decline. The Nasdaq Composite had its worst day since August, dropping 1.9% to 9,139.31.

There are 2,862 confirmed cases so far in China and the death toll in China has risen to 81. The World Health Organization’s director general is traveling to China to meet with government and health officials. In the U.S., a fifth case of coronavirus was confirmed over the weekend.

Three countries have now closed its borders to China....I am hoping that the U.S. does the same.  They should NOT allow anyone into the U.S. from China.

So is the Wuhan level 4 bio-lab going to mysteriously burn down to the ground or explode suddenly?

If there's any evidence it came from there there's going to be hell to pay.

Hell to pay by whom?  Who is going to hold China responsible?  What ramifications will they suffer?  Right now, it's sinking their own economy -- however they are an economic superpower and this is affecting global markets -- DOW was down today.

What do you think the Chinese people will do if they find out their own government did this to them while lying about it all this time?

....I don't know ... perhaps many are too you to remember the Tiananmen Square Massacre.  I'd say that the Chinese government will lie and deny or say that this was a lab "accident" that wasn't reported and someone would be the fall guy.

Chernobyl took out the Russian government and they were very good at lying. This could be China's Chernobyl in the making.

Nothing.  They will do nothing.  Die, if that's requested.
