Aluminum Foil In The 21ST Century
« on: January 15, 2020, 07:03:48 pm »
A petty issue and question of mine ... Why is it that living in the 21ST century we are still having to use the crappy and flimsy cardboard dispensers of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries?

You know the ones.

The rectangular cardboard boxes with the tearing, ripping, foil destroying ... cutting edge thingy on the outside!

Even the eight dollar foil I buy rips the foil to shreds as if I had let the cat loose on it!😟

I cut it with a knife. Never use the  'cutting edge thingy'.
Same with saran-wrap.

I sure do.

I do as well.  But I realize it has been Aluminum Since before my parents born.  Strange I use the name of product I've never seen.

@rustynail

I actually thought that my question would be answered with a bunch of wisecracks.
(I never really believed that there would be a sincere answer!)

I can't Thank You enough!

Even at the 'almost' age of seventy .. You showed me that Everyone, regardless of age, can learn something new!

I'll bet that there aren't many folks that knew about this!

Again ... Thanks!

Yeppers.

I've known about that "hack" with the aluminum foil box for years.  It's written down, right there on the box where you poke your fingers.  And I never in my life called it "tin foil."

They just make it too dang thin these days. Back in the 50's my grandmother always had a ready supply of neatly folded aluminum foil on the top shelf of her kitchen that she used over and over.

Right. You could repair body panels with that stuff...

When I worked in Abu Dhabi I worked many night shifts.  There wasn't a window blind made to keep the light and heat out of my room for daytime sleeping.  Solution?  Taping foil over the windows.  Worked like a champ.

Today's foil would require several layers, lol.

Same for hobo dinners - my primary use for tin foil... cubed meat of some kind, taters, carrots, onion, peppers... whatever, cut up and with butter chunks added... Wrapped up in tin foil and thrown in the coals...Better use two or three layers of foil anymore, or it will all end up in the fire.

I had that same trouble when I would cover Third Shift as a line tech for a production line.  I just couldn't get any sleep during the day until I foiled the windows.

That, my friend. was the true test of the quality of our foil. 888high58888

As a NASA Integrator I really didn't have a shift. I was on call 24/7 so I did a lot of daytime sleeping too. I used some some very  heavy BlockOut Drapes. Helped insulate the windows too so I could keep the bedroom cold in the summer. When I walked out of Mission Control I got so that I'd never know if it was going to be day or nite. Once when I walked out the parking lot was full of workers from the Admin Wing. A fire alarm had gone off. We never were called to evacuate. They'd just let us support a mission until we burnt up.

Absolutely....and ... if it was hardly used, I fold it up and save it for some future use.

¡Ay, caramba! .... now I am trying to remember what was the movie (or tv) quote of ahh lu lu lu ni ummm  quote (or something like that, seems to be something Steve Martin would joke about).
Exodus 18:21 Furthermore, you shall select out of all the people able men who fear God, men of truth, those who hate dishonest gain; and you shall place these over them as leaders over ....
