New York Times columnist Paul Krugman wrote Wednesday that his computer had been hacked and that someone was "using it to download child pornography."

“Someone compromised my IP address and is using it to download child pornography,” Krugman said in a tweet to his 4.6 million followers.

“I might just be a random target. But this could be an attempt to Qanon me," he added. "It’s an ugly world out there.”

Krugman, 66, later tweeted that his employer was "on the case" and indicated he would be deleting his original post, stating that the Times told him the incident "may have been a scam."

"Well, I'm on the phone with my computer security service, and as I understand it someone compromised my IP address and is using it to download child pornography," Krugman said in a since-deleted tweet.

The tweet drew baffled responses from Twitter users, many of whom pointed out that an IP address isn't a device or system that can be compromised — it's just a number that identifies a computer on a WiFi network.

Krugman later said that, after his colleagues at the Times looked into the issue, he realized the phone call was likely a scam. A spokesperson for the Times said in a statement to Business Insider that the paper's security team determined Krugman had fallen victim to a scam.

Whenever someone posts real actual death threats, or trashes their employer, or whatever dumbass thing they post on Twitter, the very first thing they claim is that they were hacked and it wasn't them. This happens very close to 100% of the time someone does something on Twitter. His claim is certainly not a new one at all.
