Clint Eastwood's 'Richard Jewell' flops at the box office in its opening weekend despite critical acclaim
By Tyler McCarthy | Fox News

Clint Eastwood’s latest film, “Richard Jewell,” performed well under expectations at the box office, bringing in only $5 million in its opening weekend.

The film landed at No. 4 over the weekend while “Jumanji: The Next Level” was far-and-away the top-grossing opener. Despite acclaim from critics, the Warner Bros. drama about a real-life security guard who was falsely accused in the media of being responsible for the 1996 Olympics bombing marked one of the worst domestic openings in the 89-year-old director’s long career.

As Variety notes, there are some glimmers of hope for “Richard Jewell” despite its low numbers. Although it underperformed at the box office, it’s hardly Eastwood’s worst opener to date. The 1980 film “Billy Bronco” debuted with just $3.7 million. Meanwhile, the films “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” (1997) and “True Crime” (1999) opened at $5.2 million, marking only slightly higher numbers than “Richard Jewell.”

Hubby and I went to see this movie.  I love Clint Eastwood as both an actor and director.  This movie fell kind of flat so much so, that I actually took a little cat nap.  It was informative, but that was about it.  Nothing to write home about and we were both disappointed.

That's too bad. I was hoping it would gain more traction and expose the evils of the modern MSM and federal law enforcement.

*hmmmm*  The wife and I saw it last week and thought it well done. Especially how in how it honestly portrayed the media.

I would definitely recommend it.

It accurately depicted once law enforcement determines you are guilty it is up to you to prove your innocence and the media goes right along with it.  It was well, done, just did have that "ah ... another great Eastwood movie" feeling.  It was a good movie, just not a "great" Eastwood movie.  Just my opinion.

Based on your review, I will wait until it is cheap for home viewing.

Eastwood is an impressive  entertainment figure, as an actor, director, musical score composer, arranger, producer etc.

The size of audiences for olde fashioned adult drama, has dimished apparently.

We went to the theater for "Motherless Brooklyn," which was great (Ed Norton), and watched "The Irishman," at home, which wasn't that good.

We have a local theater that charges $4.99/ticket regardless of the time of day.  So ... it was worth the $$.  It wasn't a bad movie, just not the best.

Go ahead and take Mom; it's Christmas!  7777sleigh

Oh, Agreed. Clint Eastwood IS my all time favorite actor and I think he is an excellent director. This just doesn't rate on my list of favorite Eastwood movies.

I watched it and enjoyed the movie.... I think the main character was played up a bit for the part (on how stupid he could be at not keeping his trap shut)... I don't think the real life fellow was that naive... surely not... but it worked, I was yelling in my head... just shut up already.

Yes, that was our thought as well.  I couldn't believe he couldn't keep his mouth shut.  It sure seemed that he wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer; perhaps some slight mental disability even?
