Quote
World Series MVP Stephen Strasburg on Monday agreed to terms with the Washington Nationals on a seven-year, $245 million contract, according to sources, six weeks after opting out of the final four years of his contract with the Nationals.

There are no opt-outs or options in the contract, a source said. Some of the contract money is deferred. Gauged before the deferrals are assessed, the contract carries the highest average annual value — $35 million — for a pitcher and tops the prior record for total value for a pitcher — David Price’s $217 million — by $28 million. Those records are expected to be short-lived, as Gerrit Cole remains unsigned as is being pursued by the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Angels, among others.

After a regular season in which for the first time in five seasons (and the second time in his career) he made more than 30 starts and posted more than 200 innings, then followed that with a dominating postseason, Strasburg traded $100 million in guaranteed salary for his first chance, at 31, at free agency . . .

Does this mean that Rendon won't be signed by the Washington Nations?
I would assume that to be the case.

It may, it may not, no matter Mark Lerner saying they could afford one but not both. Remember: the Nats' is baseball's second richest ownership at this writing, pending the approval of Steve Cohen as the new Mets principal owner. They didn't get that rich by lacking financial creativity especially having made their fortune in real estate. So as regards Anthony Rendon, remember Berra's Law. (It ain't over until it's over.) Works off the field as well as on the field.

$trasburg agreed to accept $70M-80M deferred until year 8 and perhaps beyond.

Seems to me with the appreciation of the franchises in value, that Rendon may look at is as great retirement strategy.

Who knows?  Me?

I'd rather trade Rendon and get something of value and go after a .300 hitter that's hungry for a ring and wants to be part of something.

In which case you'd be the first in baseball history who ever traded a free agent who's on the free and open job market and not under your control.  wink777

Should get a top line compensation pick though.

LOL!  Senior moment.   I thought there was a period of time, as there was with Harper, before they got nothing.

You're thinking about the qualifying offer issue and the time frame after which a player won't cost his new team the draft pick(s), a la Craig Kimbrel and Dallas Keuchel for 2019.

LOL, nice touch with the "S" in Strasburg being a "$".

With the agreement of the deferred payment, it might free up money for Rendon, I guess that is what the Nationals are hoping, anyway.

I've been misspelliing the agent Boras, Bora$$ since he and Beltran fleeced us back in 2004.
