(Thad Jones [trumpet] and Frank Wess [tenor saxophone; flute] were mainstays with the Count Basie band of the time; Paul Chambers [bass] was then still a member of the Miles Davis Quintet; Kenny Burrell [guitar] had begun making his name as both an in-demand sideman and a recording artist in his own right; Mal Waldron [piano, who wrote the four numbers this group jammed here] was both a frequent collaborator with Charles Mingus and Billie Holiday's pianist of choice during the last two years of her life) . . .
