ERBIL — Influential Iraqi Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr on Monday called for an early election while the anti-government protests continue in the capital city of Baghdad and other provinces.

Sadr wrote on Twitter that he urges Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi to announce the early elections, provided that it will be overseen by the United Nations.

“Meanwhile, there should be a determined effort to amend the Election Law and reshuffle the Electoral Commission,” Sadr, who leads the largest parliamentary bloc, said.
