Midway: An Action-Packed History Lesson

Six months after the attack on Pearl Harbor, a few brave men risked their lives to change the fate of the world. The Battle of Midway marked a pivotal turning point in the Pacific Theater during WWII, and now the true story of this heroic feat is coming to the big screen on Veterans Day weekend.

MIDWAY is an action-packed history lesson, both entertaining and informative about the clash between a small American fleet and the Imperial Japanese Navy. What's particularly interesting about this film is that it's told from multiple perspectives, giving audiences an understanding of all sides of the conflict.

"Pearl Harbor is the greatest intelligence failure in American history," says Admiral Edwin Layton (Patrick Wilson) in the MIDWAY trailer. Admiral Layton was part of a team of intelligence officers who worked to break Japanese communication codes. At the time, the U.S. Navy understood the warning of the attack, but not Japan's military power.

A reflection.
Rather than an intelligence failure, Pearl Harbor was the result of not "knowing the enemy"!
During the Russo-Japanese War, Japan destroyed Russia's Eastern Fleet using deception,
a prominent oriental behavioral trait, in the Strait of Tsushima in 1905.
Ironically, the Japanese Commander was Togo; the same individual in both battles !

Shigenori Togo was Tojo's foreign minister in '41. Different guy. Yamamoto was present at Tsushima as an ordinary seaman though, he lost three fingers in the battle.

Kimmel, Short, Marshall, Stark et all committed the very common error of basing their prewar planning on what Japan would likely do, and not what they were capable of doing. BTW what is amazing is all of the Japanese planners of the PH debacle, as well as leaders on the US side, knew Japan would never in a million years win a war with the US, but plain old momentum carried Japan into the war anyway. Those who might be able to stop it were afraid of running afoul of others in their cadre, afraid of being seen as not a team player, etc, or most importantly were afraid of being assassinated by zealots. But they all knew how the war would end up. Of course something like a Midway was bound from the beginning to happen.

....

A new teaser trailer has been released for “Midway,” a $100 million World War II movie that will hit theaters November 8.

Released last week, the trailer shows the major World War II conflict, Battle of Midway, but depicts it with heavily computer-generated aircraft battles and explosions reminiscent of a video game trailer, peppered with some real submarine scenes.

Watch the trailer below for your own assessment:

For one's own assessment, I think the graphics are acceptable. You run into this with a lot of movies nowadays. So, as said, it's up to each individual, I have seen graphics in movies, where I think it hurts the production.

Did 'Pearl' have a lot of computer graphics? I enjoyed that movie.

My error.
* The Japanese Commander/Gensui at Tsushima was Togo Heihachiro.
* The Japanese Commander at Pearl Harbor was Yamamoto.
