Sanders slips in polls, raising doubts about campaign
By Jonathan Easley - 07/03/19 06:00 AM EDT

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is slipping in polls following the first Democratic debate, raising questions about whether he can recapture the insurgent energy that nearly carried him to the party's presidential nomination in 2016.

Three new polls released after the first Democratic debate show Sanders falling into fourth place behind former Vice President Joe Biden, Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.).

A fourth poll, released Wednesday morning as this story was published, found Sanders retaining his second place standing behind Biden. The ABC News-Washington Post poll found Biden in the lead at 29 percent, followed by Sanders at 23 percent and Harris and Warren lagging at 11 percent each.

The Sanders campaign says those counting him out are once again underestimating a candidate who surprised the political world three years ago and remains a small-dollar fundraising juggernaut with an enthusiastic core of supporters.

Sanders' weakness has surprised me. I'm guessing his 2016 supporters were mostly college age and many have graduated to the real world? And maybe they were more anti-Clinton than I thought at the time, so not so motivated this time? Or Bernie no longer has a monopoly on promising them a no-strings lifetime gravy train free of any semblance of effort or personal responsibility (as long as they keep voting dem)?

Two things come to mind: Stassen Syndrome (he lost in 2016, so there's a contingent that probably is turned off by seeing him run again), made worse by the increased competition. He's white, male and almost 80—all things that the modern Democratic Party is firmly against (throw in Jewish there, too, for a sizable contingent of the younger wing of the party). For a party whose modern face is the not-yet-eligible Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, there definitely seems to be a sense that the older socialists like Bernie are no longer necessary. He helped plant the seeds for the socialist revival but won't be needed to see it come to fruition.

The economy is doing great so his gloom and doom messaging isn't as appealing this go-around.

Then why are the openly socialist candidates as a group getting a solid majority in the polls?

A lot of the more aware 2016 supporters became disgusted and disillusioned as they saw how he responded to the Clinton machine virtually stealing the nomination from him.  He fell in line and accepted his payoffs....  that didn't play well with a lot of them that I talk to.

Is it possible some democrats are still sane and don't want the corrupt and inefficient government to run their lives? Sure hope so.

Why vote for a creaking, croaking old communist, when there are so many nice young ones from which to choose...?
