Trump told reporters at the White House on Wednesday that he’s still a huge fan of Upstate New Yorkers, who voted for him in 2016. He blamed state government for the region’s economic challenges.

“I love those people,” Trump said of Upstate New York residents. “Those people are my voters. They’ve been treated very badly…If New York isn’t gonna treat them better, I would recommend they go to another state where they can get a great job.”

Trump made his comments when asked about a July 2017 interview in which he said Upstate New Yorkers should leave their homes behind and move to other states facing labor shortages.
