(Reuters) - U.S. farmers are in “relatively stable” financial health despite a bruising trade war between the United States and China that has weakened crop prices, the chief executive of farm supplier Nutrien Ltd said on Thursday.

Farmer bankruptcies in 2018 were lower than the previous year, and below the 10-year average, CEO Chuck Magro said on a quarterly conference call.

Farmers’ increasing debt is largely due to purchases of land, the value of which has been firm, he said. Nutrien has also seen an increase this year in pre-payments for crop inputs such as seed, fertilizer and chemicals.

Correct. We should completely ignore their S. China Sea ambitions and claims behind the Nine Dash Line. While we’re at it, we’ll also overlook their large contracts for Iranian oil, ownership of Ukrainian farmland, expansion into Africa and South America, along with investment in Latin America. The cherry on top would be control over both ports in the Panama Canal by a Beijing friendly company, Hutchinson Whampoa.

Though, I’m not entirely certain what that has to do with the farm bill, bailing out the damage from the soybean tariff.

Uh....no. The shutdown occurred late in the year, so 4th quarter growth was not expected to be affected. It was 1st Quarter growth. Who said so? It was the White House and Trump’s economic advisor, Larry Kudlow.


The White House now expects the funding lapse to sap 0.1 percentage point from GDP growth every week it lasts, double the administration's initial estimate of the economic damage. While the effect on fourth-quarter 2018 GDP may prove small, the shutdown could knock a chunk off first-quarter 2019 growth.

The real effects of the tariff were the reason the farm bill and financial aid was given to soybean farmers.


"I talked to the President as recently as last night," Perdue said. "And he said, 'Sonny, you can assure your farmers out there that we're not going to allow them to be the casualties if this trade dispute escalates. We're going to take care of our American farmers. You can tell them that directly."
