How about Dix-a-billy? IIRC, this was considered side B on one of my 45s, and I couldn't get my fill of it.

There's a lot here that's impressive, but I am fascinated by (and a little jealous of) people who can yodel. Do you think it's a natural gift, or can people be taught?

Aw, anyone can do it... It was how folks hollered to each other back in the day. That's what folks do wrong, trying. Too timid. At least when starting, you've got to mean it - Belt it out. Kinda like gulping water backwards... without the vomit.  :laugh:  Really have to open the throat.

Quote
Also, re the stringed instruments you play... can you read music, or do you play by ear?

Nope. Can't read a lick.  :shrug:
Just picked up a guitar one day and never put it down. Learned pickin on Wildwood Flower... My folks still can't stand that song, I'll tell you what... Picked up the rest as I went along, and went semi-pro... played bars and honkytonks for a while, and was in the house band for a small recording studio...

Then life happened. Figured out I hit my limit, and like wrangling horses, there just wasn't any money in it.

Having a hard time sleeping tonight because LAST NIGHT I tripped over uneven concrete in my driveway and took a hard splat. Tonight I'm really feeling it. I'm ready to take something for pain and try again to get some sleep. Who knew I'd still be hurting like this since my fall was LAST NIGHT?

I get that @AllThatJazzZ ... The third day after a fall is the worst for me...  :shrug:

Hope you're alright.

Understand, I think part of the glue of this forum has to do with the fact that most of us are not spring chickens anymore. We all are conservatives in some sort of fashion, but there is a respect that we know each other as humans beyond the political differences. I don't take falls lightly anymore, most of us don't. So it is nice to have nice folks to share a story of a fall with, even late at night. I pray you make it through this with nothing but a brief bad memory. Next week it may be me sharing a story or two in a similar vein. @AllThatJazzZ

Hmmm... You play guitar (12-string included) and other stringed instruments. You don't read music, rather have a natural ability to learn on your own. You've done session work. You can yodel. You like country and numerous genres of music. I'm starting to wonder if Glen Campbell's Alzheimer's diagnosis and death was a hoax.

    I'm cheating here, but this certainly sounds like some Jazz/Blues from the 40s/50s, to me anyway.

Well, maybe, other than the money...  :whistle:

Speaking of Glen Campell, The Band Perry did a decent cover of 'Gentle on my Mind'

Fun stuff! I'd never heard this side of them. I've got some errands to run today, but I can see I'll be drawn back to the computer later and find myself blissfully lost in some rabbit trails of discovery and entertainment. In the meantime, here's another live performance I got a kick out of from the 70s. Enjoy!

Nice video. I was digging on it until 3:27 when the lyrics went tilt. I couldn't actually understand her lyrics, but I do know it wasn't "my beard a roughening coal pile." Being a lyric freak is hard.  88kleenix

@AllThatJazzZ

Yeah I know... As it turns out, there is an alt lyric that is often offered for the song:

"My beard a rustlin cold towel"

If you were to search the lyrics, I am sure you will find them both ways.
It being one of my favorite songs, it ain't the first time I heard it presented that way. I think somebody somewhere wrote it down wrong back in the day.  :shrug:

I ain't as much of a stickler, as I had heard it done wrong before.

I still like the cover - and I rarely like covers... Maybe it's just the banjo  :laugh:

@roamer_1

Interesting, although I don't understand what "my beard a rustlin' cold towel" might mean. Or why a woman is singing about her beard. Sign of the times?

Glen Campbell is my absolute favorite entertainer, and there are a few instances on some of my favorite videos where he gets the lyrics wrong. In almost every case, it lessens my enjoyment of the song. A couple of them are accidental, and people wouldn't ever know if they weren't lyric nuts. A couple of them are deliberate. He decided to update "She's Gone, Gone, Gone" by changing "train" to "plane." It doesn't work for me. However, he changed a lyric in Allen Toussaint's "Southern Nights," and I like it far better. He first recorded it as Toussaint had written it: "Every flower touched his cold hand." That line made me sad, and I guess it had the same effect on Glen because in later performances, he changed "cold" to "gentle." Yes!

This is my favorite version of "Southern Nights." I have to hear it at least once a week.

Yeah... I guess I am a lot the same way - I tend not to like concerts because the artist will often want to change it up a little bit after singing the same ol thing several hundred times. I tend to like studio better for that reason... A proper version, set in stone.

Maybe that is partly from working in a bar band, as by far and away, what you are doing is playing covers, And in almost all things, you'd better strive to play it right, or the crowd will have your head.
The closer you can come to that famous (studio) version, the better.

St. James Infirmary Blues is an American jazz song of uncertain origin. Louis Armstrong made the song famous in his 1928 recording on which Don Redman was credited as composer; later releases gave the name Joe Primrose, a pseudonym of Irving Mills. The melody is 8 bars long, unlike songs in the classic blues genre, where there are 12 bars. It is in a minor key, and has a 4/4 time signature, but has also been played in 3/4.

Hugh Laurie St James Infirmary 2011

Listening to them as I type, that transfusion song (driving too fast and stupid) is right up my kid's alley for a learning lesson on not driving like there is no tomorrow.
I have to work tonight, but will unzip them and listen when I get off work.
How God must weep at humans' folly! Stand fast! God knows what he is doing!
Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

@Sighlass

Thanks for the lists. I have a confession to make. I use your lists as a "cheat sheet" and pick out the songs I want to hear, then I go over to YouTube and find the versions I like best. I've been known to spend 3 or 4 hours there when I get on one of my music kicks. It happens more often than you might think.  wink777

Here's my favorite version of "Stormy Monday."

I know that Bing Crosby did it in 1942, but I love this version (& the cute cartoon)!

@pookie18

Thanks, I always appreciate what you post, a lot of useful knowledge.

I guess. to remember, he has so many songs, maybe I will post some Elvis-related music...need, we forget, Elvis passed on on this day, August 16, 1977.

Called the Female Elvis, Janis Martin:

Error 404 (Not Found)!!1

Then, a friend of mine likes these clips:

Error 404 (Not Found)!!1

Judy Tyler appeared with Elvis in one of his movies, she apparently is another one of those stars who died young, car accident.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judy_Tyler
Sad, it happens nowadays but it seemed to happen a lot back then.

Error 404 (Not Found)!!1

So, this is a tribute song? Wow, via France, I found out this... as if we Americans know this. Judy Tyler, pretty sad story, very beautiful.

---------

Two great female singers from the '50s,

Well, there may not be that much we think of about Nebraska but if you ever meet someone from there, ask them if they know who Sparkle Moore is, this gal had real talent and my understanding is that she left the recording business and didn't pursue it. Of the female rockabilliers at least, pretty much tops....very Elvisey I'd say up there along with the likes of Buddy Holly, didn't pursue it. Is still alive, born in 1939 so, very young apparently, okay, 1936, still when she recorded songs like this.

Rock A Bop - Sparkle Moore

Error 404 (Not Found)!!1

So, if you ever meet someone from the great state of Nebraska,  I'll have to see where she came to record these, I once read a book from the library but basically, it had all this detailed info about where so many singles and albums were recorded in the day and all of the other relevant info. Sort of a reference.

To Fats Domino, man, I've seen his boxset, most of us know his big hits.... but he did a lot of work.

I'm going to text this version out next Christmas. It's so cute and musically entertaining, you can't take your eyes off of it.

Johnny Long and his orchestra - In Old Shanty Town

Error 404 (Not Found)!!1

There's a shanty in a town on a little plot o' ground
With the green grass growin' all around, all around
The roof's so worn, so badly torn
That it tumbles to the ground

Just a tumbledown shack and it's built way back
About twenty-five feet from the railroad track
Lingers on my mind most all of the time
Keeps callin' me back to my little old shack

In observance of the anniversary his passing, here's some of Glen Campbell's early work from the doo-wop era before he hit the big time.

Good songs, that's also very fascinating music, I will have to look this up, I already listen to a Burgess tune, of course, we all know who Ricky and Glenn were. I will post that Trophies video in another forum at some point, I'll bet they didn't know this was a band either. Rock City Boogie Forum though, it's kind of not that popular, I learned a lot there.
