How Many Colleges Will Go Under? Will Yours Be One?

By Richard Vedder December 11, 2018

Two of our nation’s premier credit rating agencies, Moody’s and Fitch, have issued reports recently giving a negative outlook on the finances of American higher education. Of course, the financial condition of schools varies considerably: there are affluent ones with large cash reserves, billions in investments in their endowment, and robust demand for their services, while other schools are worried about where they will get cash to meet their payroll and pay their bills. I heard of one state school that was supposedly trying to sell buildings in order to meet its payroll.

IMHO, we have far too many colleges and universities anyway, including many which don't teach anything making a graduate employable.  Seems they are churning out brainwashed "social justice warriors" who can't read or write sufficiently to complete an employment application.  What do we need these schools for?

When I was a kid, it was a dream of most parents to send their kids to college.  Today, if I had kids, I would prefer to send them to a trade or technical school where they would at least have an opportunity to learn a skill that would get them a job.

I see many two-year, reasonably priced tech schools that are actually teaching skills of the future, and graduating people making 50 - 100K or more nearly straight out of graduation. Even cheaper online schools doing the same.

Then I see these old, moldy and fossilized 4-year universities churning out gender studies, medieval literature, and arts n' farts types with 200K debt and headed straight to retail fast food.

You suddenly begin to feel like Atlas with a strong need to shrug.
The Republic is lost.

When the Democrat socialist pass free Community College admissions for all... maybe a lot of the 4 years will go under.
