Dems take over 1,800 House jobs, pay up to $172,500, Trump helping jobless Republicans

These are thrilling times for Democrats as they savor their 40-seat House victory and prepare to add some 1,800 staffers to the congressional payroll.
Most, about 1,000, will head to House committee positions as lawyers, administrators and communicators. And about another 400-800 will be hired by the new House members for jobs in both Washington and back home.
House rules let members employ up to 18 aides in their Washington and state offices, and the top pay is pretty good at $168,411. For committee aides it can reach $172,500.
But as good as it is for incoming Democratic staffers, many with experience in the Obama administration and Hillary Rodham Clinton presidential campaign, it’s a jolt to the Republican staffers getting the boot.
“Is it sad? Yes. Is it fun? No. But it’s not devastating, we’ll move on,†said the top staffer to an ousted Republican.
