Fun one, @AllThatJazzZ!

I like this one.  When a man in a cowboy hat calmly removes his shades, you know something's about to go down.  Robber has gun and knife.

Seriously, I've always wondered whether I could take action if I were a customer in a store or bank when a would-be robber came in.

You'll know what to do.  I think you have more training than most people.

@mountaineer

Practice it in your mind.  Think of various situation that could happen and what you would do - think of it as what your every action would be in each situation.  That way, it will be more automatic for you to do.

True.  If one rehearses, one can reduce the chance of hesitations that can cost an innocent life.

We go to a fairly large Catholic Church.  I have said before on here that our priest was an army sniper.  But, I wonder if there have have been any men in church that have been asked to be security - have a weapon on them?  Any plan made if there is some bad guy with a weapon?

Our rural Presbyterian church is in the process of training about a dozen people - male and female, young and old. Our trainers are former police and military guys. As far as I know, we all have carry permits and some experience with guns (some a lot more than others). We're learning basic tactics for taking down a suspect in the most likely scenario: a nut walking into the sanctuary Sunday morning either to steal the offering or just to shoot up the place, a la Sutherland Springs. But we're also considering other things, like evacuation plans, what to do if a non-custodial parent shows up at the pre-school, etc.

We're working with a local training facility, but this organization in MN offers a lot of information about church security and training.

I can see your point, but as far as the clerk in the video is concerned, his life was in jeopardy the moment the robber's gun came out.  The guy can be so hopped up on drugs he's liable to shoot the clerk if he thinks he's moving too slowly.

In this setting, the bad guy may decide to start shooting everybody in the place, so other customers also have a stake in the results.

Just about the only place I don't carry is at work, and that is because it is illegal. I even carry in Church. Years ago before I had my permit we had a homeless guy carrying a backpack walk up the side aisle toward the altar.. I told my wife that if I stand up she was to get under the pew and stay there until I cam to get her. All i had was my leatherman, but it was better than nothing. Fortunately several of the ushers politely escorted him out without incident. This was just after one of the Church shootings. You just never know nowadays.

If a person points a gun at you, how do you know it is simply just the cash?

Could be he intends to use it anyway, so it is no time to be meek when survival is at stake.

It'd be a high stakes gamble. Chances are a person holding up a store just wants to get that cash and take off. They're not trying to make a scene. I think the possibility of death goes up if you engage the gunman in that situation.

The high stakes gamble is depending upon him behaving that way.

Pointing a gun at someone is tantamount as sealing your own death.  Goes for both the gun holder and who he points it at.

You are making the assumption what the robber is going to do.  How do you know they will stop at just a fist full of cash?

If someone pulls a weapon to commit a crime in my presence, I am going to assume you are prepared to use that weapons on others.  If I am armed, I will chose to stop them before it proceeds that far.

You have to choose one of two gambles. If you don't have a lot of training the "take out the perp" gamble probably has a higher probability of death in my opinion.

EDIT: But if you have a firearm and can just shoot him in the back of the head while he doesn't realize you're a threat, that is perhaps another story. I was assuming a situation where you are unarmed.

Fair enough.  I was assuming a situation where I had my conceal carry.

Otherwise, I would not take on someone holding a weapon unless they were already coming at me with it.  If I felt I had the choice, I would try to get away with a good description of the attacker.

In some jurisdictions shooting a person in the back (ie. fleeing) if you are a civilian is a serious "no no". A police officer may be allowed to if the person is armed and the officer has reason to believe the the fleeing suspect will pose a threat to someone else.

I think you'd be alright in that case. You'd have eye witnesses and a camera to back up your story. The dude isn't fleeing he is holding people up, and you had an opportunity to save lives by shooting him from behind. No way you go to prison for that.

I bet they'll try, if it's CA or HI.
