Unearthed pictures reveal the moment a German ship shelled at Polish harbour Gdansk just days before England confirmed war

 Guns blaze into life on the SMS Schleswig-Holstein to signal the start of the Second World War .

The images of the conflict’s opening salvo emerged in an album compiled by a sailor who was on the German ship as it shelled a harbour in Danzig, now Gdansk, Poland.

One snap from September 1, 1939, shows the harbour on the Westerplatte peninsula ablaze. We declared war two days later.

Honestly, if one has Polish in them, these photos are quite disheartening to view. So, see it at the article, perhaps one should, if Polish, to see a facet of the war that may be a new finding.
