The actual number of illegal immigrants appears to be far larger than previously understood

The most common number offered by our media for the number of people living here illegally seems to be about 12 million. Factcheck.org, published by the Annenberg Public Policy Center, purporting to be a neutral and objective source, cites DHS estimates as well as NGOs:
There were 12.1 million immigrants living in the country illegally as of January 2014, according to the most recent estimate from the Department of Homeland Security. The estimates from two independent groups are similar: The Pew Research Center estimates the number at 11.1 million in 2014, and the Center for Migration Studies says there were 11 million people in 2015 living in the U.S. illegally (see Table 1 in the full report).
That would be about 3.5 percent to 3.8 percent of the total U.S. population in 2014.
