Red-light cameras don't reduce traffic accidents or improve public safety: analysis
July 19, 2018, Case Western Reserve University

Red-light cameras don't reduce the number of traffic accidents or injuries at intersections where the devices are installed, according a new analysis by Case Western Reserve University.

Touted by supporters as a way increase public safety by ticketing drivers who continue through red lights, the cameras actually shift traffic patterns: More drivers tend to brake harder and more abruptly, increasing fender-benders and other so-called "non-angle" collisions.

They don't reduce the accidents, but that's not really the goal anyway.  The purpose of red-light cameras are to generate municipal income.  They collect hundreds of dollars each ticket, even if the driver decides to go the "traffic school" route.

  • All deserve a trial if accused
There was some traffic accident with fatalities I read about lately and they were able to find the alleged perpetrator through CCTV. So, I don't know if it was one of those traffic light cameras but they did find a suspect.

The stated goal of the cameras is to deter red-light running by issuing tickets.  If somebody got caught in a hit and run by a camera, it's ancillary.  The same result could have been obtained by having a camera that doesn't issue tickets.

If that was so, then there would be a one-size-fits-all traffic camera which there is not.

There are, vehicle detection cameras, surveillance cameras and red-light running cameras.

That doesn't refute my contention that red-light cameras are to raise revenue, not deter accidents.  I'd believe otherwise if municipalities did not charge "court fees" for traffic class that are in excess of guilty pleas for tickets.

One city in TX was not reaping enough revenue at their Red Light camera intersections.  The solution was to shorten the length of  time the yellow light stayed on before going red.

Worked like a charm.

  • Well EXCUSE me!
Years ago in Anaheim,CA we had a ballot measure to eliminate red light cameras forever, it passed handily but not surprisingly there were still sheeple that voted against the measure.

There are people who believe the government would never lie to us about their motives.

  • I was a "conspiracy theorist". Now I'm just right.
Folks I know in MD told me that the stats indicated an increase in rear end impacts after the installation of red-light cameras. People who would have formerly gone through on the yellow were slamming on their brakes to avoid getting stuck at a ticket for a 'pink light' changing as they entered the intersection. The vehicles behind them could not stop in time.

Yep, it is all about the revenue, not safety.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
