Number of sinkholes in Florida surges since Hurricane Irma

May. 10, 2018 - 1:41 - Residents of a Central Florida neighborhood are stuck in a nightmare after more than a dozen sinkholes have opened, forcing the evacuation of eight homes. More than 400 sinkholes have been reported in the state since Hurricane Irma hit last September, a sudden spike from previous years, and now meteorologists predict this year’s hurricane season could be even worse.

Sinkholes have more to do with pumping water from the aquifer.  The more water taken out the more sinkholes.

@driftdiver

Exactly right, in general.  However, where the water table is raised up into soils that bridge a void, and then the water drains out, dislodging the bridging soil, you will often get sinkholes, too.
