Koxa, 38, beat reigning record-holder Garrett McNamara’s wave by two feet, which had stood since 2011. Koxa bagged a $25,000 prize for his effort from Quiksilver XXL at the World Surf League Big Wave Awards in California. U.K. surfer Andrew Cotton also received an award for biggest wipeout, after he broke his back surfing a wave at Nazare Break, the same beach Koxa found his 80-foot monster.
