Family Farmers Face Prison for Calling Skim Milk by Its Name

Forget narcotics. Uncle Sam has a new substance to crack down on: all-natural skim milk.

Food and Drug Administration regulations make it a federal crime for dairy farmers to call all-natural skim milk exactly what it is—skim milk. Instead, the FDA demands that farmers label additive-free skim milk as “imitation milk product,” because, in the FDA’s mind, skim milk just isn’t the real thing.

The FDA’s finicky rules are not going unchallenged, however. Attorneys with the Institute for Justice are challenging those rules on behalf of a dairy farmer, Randy Sowers, who wants to sell all-natural products and label them honestly, without the threat of fines or imprisonment.

Randy and Karen Sowers founded their South Mountain Creamery in Maryland on rented land back in 1981. They took out a loan and bought 100 cows. Today, three generations of Sowers work on their family’s 2,200 acre farm. They have more than 600 cattle, plus 16,000 chickens. Their family employs more than 75 people.

I milked cows in my yoot.  There was a spinner thing in the stainless steel room that was used to separate the heavy cream from milk.  That is probably not considered "real" either.

I worked on a dairy farm several summers as a yute too.  It was up early and hard work.  My Mom set it up for me.  Seems I was a bit of a slacker and she wanted to show me how the real world worked.  Cussed her at the time.   I thanked her many years later.   She was the best.

I bet! My brothers and I "got" to go to a farm every summer, separately. I am sure the farmer and his wife could not handle the three of us all at one time.

But what an experience.  I actually did the old "push, pull and squeeze" on my favorite cow twice daily.  Great experience!

I put my finger in one of the auto milkers. That suction was strong.  Ouch!

I actually prefer Corona brand, but since they gave up their tin and went to plastic, they just call it an ointment...

But yeah... Bag balm has been used forever on the farm, for all kinds of things, but primarily, for cowboys... Saddle sores. You will always find bag balm in the saddle bags.

It is better than any lotion you ladies might use, and is the #1 treatment for cuts and abrasions.
