Florida beachgoers discover 'holy grail of shipwrecks' after remains of 18th century ship wash ashore

Part of an old sailing ship believed to be from the 18th century washed ashore on Ponte Vedra beach in Florida overnight on Tuesday, local officials said.

Early Wednesday morning, Julie Turner and her 8-year-old son came across the ship, CBS47 reported. The two first thought it was a part of fence, but realized shortly after it was “a historical piece of artifact," Turner told the news station. It was later determined to be a well-preserved section of a wooden ship's hull.

 "holy grail of shipwrecks"????

That reporter must have taken the wrong drugs for her PMS. There are several 18 and 19 century sailing ships visible on the beaches of the Outer Banks of NC after every storm. If you drive on the beach, you have to keep an eye out for them so you don't run over one and get hung up on it. There is even the wreck of a steam powered ship visible at low tide in one area. You can see most of the boiler sticking up above the waves on the sandbar where she hit ground. There is also one 49 Chevy that shows up occasionally. All this stuff gets covered up again at the next tide, and appears again after the next storm.

The exception is the steam ship boiler. It's been 30 years or so since I have been there,so it could have washed away or even removed for scrap since then. Or the shoreline could have changed and it is in deeper water now.
Anyone who isn't paranoid in 2021 just isn't thinking clearly!

I had the same reaction as you did.
