Got sick last year after some bozo behind me on the plane was coughing and not covering his mouth. 

Honestly, though, I doubt I could have avoided the germs no matter where I was on the plane.  In such a closed environment, the germs are going to be all over the aircraft.

I didn't really see much besides people moving around and use hand sanitizer.

Otherwise, an N-95 mask, properly worn, might be your best bet if you are afraid of pathogens.
