Cities are part of the system we’ve invented to keep people alive on Earth. People tend to like cities, and have been congregating in them ever since the invention of agriculture, 10,000 or so years ago. That’s why we call it civilisation. This origin story underlines how agriculture made cities possible, by providing enough food to feed a settled crowd on a regular basis. Cities can’t work without farms, nor without watersheds that provide their water. So as central as cities are to modern civilisation, they are only one aspect of a system.

I would tell the writer of the article to set the example by offing himself right now. If he refuses, then you can accuse him/her of being a commie hypocrite....

What I think he is advocating is have some kind of mass die off and  massive birth control. I think..

I have talked to the Population control freaks on FB  and told them to do that. Nothing but silence.

I just connected this right now. Robinson is also a crappy science fiction writer. I read the Red/Green/Blue Mars  back in the 90's and since then I pass on all his crap. He is a commie h, and is not ashamed to state it. ypocrite

The irony is this.. He is the first SciFi writer that hates space travel. Correction.. No space travel until we 'solve all of our problems' person. As for his Mars books, they where OK..

I don't remember how far I got, but I quit in the middle of one of those books.  I almost never won't finish a book.

I read the article, and I think we're missing a point.  He didn't say kill off half the people, he said cram all the people we have into the cities and leave the rest of the world to the lions and gazelles.  The idiot doesn't seem to know where food comes from, I didn't detect a lick of that understanding in the article.

I thought the name looked familiar - I had to force myself to finish Red Mars - I don't remember much about it except the characters were unbelievably lame.
