New Lost in Space has a black Judy Robinson, a Hispanic Major West, and a female Dr. Smith

Netflix is remaking the campy 1960s series Lost in Space.  As might be expected, the network is doing everything it can to ethnically cleanse white people and men from the cast, but it's a hard proposition, given that in the original series, the story focused on Professor John Robinson, a white man; his white wife, Maureen Robinson; Major Don West, a white man; Will Robinson, a white boy; and Dr. Zachary Smith, a white man.

The show-runners started by replacing Dr. Smith with a woman, Parker Posey.  Yes, Dr. Smith is now a girl (in much the same way that Britain's Dr. Who is now Nurse Who).

I hated this show..it was so lame. This was during the days when a family only had one tv..my younger brothers and sister loved it so the rest of us had to suffer through it.



and I hated Billy Mummy.....

Black Panther is cleaning up because they went with a distinct character that is a black guy rather than altering some established white character.

Star Trek kept the theme of the show but introduced new characters for different time periods. Different characters.

It doesn't matter one bit. There is no need or reason to 'stay true to the original'. Because less than 5% of people in America even know what the original was.

How do you make a movie of a sitcom that had a laugh track every few seconds?

Beverly Hillbillies movie was the worst movie ever made.
Fred Flintstone movie stunk and failed
Brady Bunch movie stunk and failed
Adams Family movie stunk and failed
Lost in Space movie stunk and failed...soon
And a dozen others

The idiots in Hollywood are trying to spoof something that nobody knows about. Everybody leaves confused. The people who know what it is hate it. And the people who don't know what the original was, don't understand half the satire and jokes. It's a lose, lose, and that's why they always fail.

Still waiting for that blockbuster 'Alf' movie or maybe a 'My Three Sons' remake? I'm giving them ideas, and they will do it. Just wait and see.

I'm really starting to get bugged with Netflix, they are so getting blocked from content that a large percentage of their new content on watch instantly is either in house content or freakin Bollywood movies.

I think the discussion centers around the fact that it 's almost impossible to be "good" when the producers seem to be more concerned with having a diverse cast than actually writing good plots for them, and believable character development. 

Then there's the issue of attempting to reboot a series that already has a great deal of prior character development.  That's always problematic.

I believe this was taken from the cover of Isaac Asimov's Astounding (May have been one of the I Robot covers).

I think it is perfectly fair in this context to point to Star Trek TOS and the push for diverse characters to show that doesn't actually preclude a good show- especially consider that for their time. On the contrary, I believe because the show was not a box of saltine crackers (and not just based on race but not having all the characters be cookie cutter replicas of each other in many ways), is why it had staying power.

As for prior character development, we are so far past the original series and reboot movies, the only ones who will care about that will be the extremely obsessed sci fi nerds who would bitch about anything anyway. If done well, this will have a new audience and a new fanbase. Think about the new 'grittier' Superman and Batman that diverged from the look/feel/character development of their counterparts.

Diversity was baked in the Star Trek TOS cake.  I leave it to Gene Roddenberry to explain:
