They're not going to shoot a car into space, are they? :pondering:

This is the "deep space" vehicle, right?

However, if everything does go according to plan, SpaceX will attempt another first -- it will try to recover all three boosters after successfully pushing its payload into orbit. According to SpaceX, the two side boosters -- which were used on previous missions -- will return to dry land at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on the company's Landing Zone 1 and 2 pads. The central booster will make its landing off the Florida coast on the “Of Course I Still Love You” autonomous droneship.

What is the Falcon Heavy going to do?

For the first Falcon Heavy flight, SpaceX is going to try to launch it to orbit without blowing up. This is a demonstration mission, meant to see if the Falcon Heavy can simply send a payload to orbit. That’s why the rocket’s cargo is pretty silly: it’s Elon Musk’s Tesla roadster, made even sillier with the possible inclusion of a dummy in the passenger seat, dressed in a brand-new SpaceX suit, naturally. The Falcon Heavy is supposed to put the car (as well as the passenger, presumably) into an orbit around the Sun known as a Hohmann transfer orbit. This path will take the car as far out from the Sun as the distance of Mars’ orbit. However, the car won’t be going anywhere near Mars, so there’s no risk of the car contaminating the planet with Earth microbes.

LOL For an enginerd like me it's easy to look past that nonsense and just see the technological achievement.

Plus, it's cool for my almost 6 year old to see and then come inside and draw a picture of what his idea is of a shuttle that can do what he just saw.

Skip to about the 30-minute mark for the lift off.

Go to about the 36-minute mark to watch the booster re-entry and landing.

I looked it up on Wikipedia...

The Falcon Heavy has almost half of the payload limit to low earth orbit as the old Saturn V rockets, for about a tenth of the cost (in equivalent time-adjusted dollars).
And (so far) they both have 100% reliability.

That's very encouraging.

Today SpaceX achieved a spectacular and historic success.
Seven years ago, the Augustine commission said that NASA's Moon program had to be cancelled, because the development of the necessary heavy lift booster would take 12 years and 36 billion dollars.
SpaceX has now done that, on its own dime, in half the time and a twentieth of the cost.
And not only that, but the launch vehicle is three quarters reusable.
This is a revolution. The naysayers have been completely refuted.
The Moon is now within reach. Mars is now within reach.
The moment is at hand to open the space frontier. America should seize the time.
And to the SpaceX team, let us offer this salute:
You did it. They said it couldn't be done, but you did it. You made it look easy, but we know it wasn't.
You took your knocks. You took your failures. But you fought it through.
Fortune favors the brave. Fortune favors the smart. But most of all, Fortune favors the tough.
Talk about the right stuff. You guys are great.
Hats off!

Did center booster land safely on the drone ship?

I've been trying to find the answer to this but there's no information AFAICT.

The stories I read last night suggested it did not.  The video just show a blast of vapor when it was supposed to be landing, so there was no dramatic show as there was with the boosters at KSC.

Love  him or  hate him,you have to admit that Musk knows how to sell a product. The photos this morning of a red Tesla roadster in outer space being driven by a dummy inside an astronaut suit with the planet Earth in the background has to be the coolest damn photo I have ever seen in my life.

Wait! What!? Are you saying that the guy driving the Roadster is a dummy?
You cannot "COEXIST" with people who want to kill you.
If they kill their own with no conscience, there is nothing to stop them from killing you.

Ya gotta know NASA would never have done a stunt like that.  Straight out of Heavy Metal.
