Why Does Coffee Make You Poop?

There are a few different reasons why coffee makes people feel the urge to poop. (Credit: Shutterstock)

You may consume coffee to get your day started, as a pick-me-up, or to get you through a lengthy meeting. You may also drink it to, perhaps, get things moving along on schedule.

About 29 percent of people claim they felt the urge to poop after drinking coffee, according to a commonly cited study from 1990. But why? Discover reached out to a gastroenterology expert to see if we could get to the bottom of it.

If it's a triple mocha, you've got a point. But an incidental one - Now, a green chili burrito, or a White Castle hamburger (or twelve)...

There was an article out of Chicago some years back about a thief who got caught, but had swallowed the evidence (a gem of some significance). While in custody, they fed him a big ol bag of sliders as part of the interrogation process, and let nature take it's course. Apparently, there was an 'hastening' made necessary by a limit of 24 hrs in holding, which it seems, was met with time to spare. Now that's funny, right there!
